Corrugated Iron...where?

Listening to my Trusty Wireless, (Radio Receiver), as I do, this morning, a comment came up...

"Whatever became of Corrugated Iron?".... ...!

When was the last time you saw a new building being constructed using this material?

At one time it seemed that everything was constructed from it...especially in the "Old World", and the beginnings of the "New World"....!

Many old black and white photographs from the past used to show Corrugated Iron buildings, and roofs.

A very rare sight now on modern buildings.

I wonder what caused its demise?

Aluminum is cheaper, lighter, and easier to work with, plus won't rust.  I guess some of the same reasons why so many cars switched to aluminum, and now it seems plastic.

Here where I live, numerous barns are still sided & roofed with that stuff.

I thinks it's been declared a health hazard from so many needing tetanus shots after trying to replace it, and work with the old rusty stuff.

Now we use vinyl siding.

We are still using it here in Aussie(no jokes about third world countries please)and it seems very popular as a colorbond product as well as your average silver treatment.

As a matter of fact I can hear the patter of rain on the roof as I type this.

Aaaaahhhhh!  The sound of rain on a tin roof----Heaven!!!!

At one time there was a lot of Corrugated Asbestos around, as a replacement to Corrugated Iron, (its still on the roof of my Garden Shed), but because of the health hazards, and big scare, of (Blue) Asbestos now, its probably not available any more.

Roof Guttering and down pipes ware often made of Asbestos, now replaced, on my Housing Estate, by Plastic.

I believe we also had a shed with an asbestos roof.  Hurricane Katrina took care of that for us.

We have corrugated laserlight, It's sort of like fiberglass

I think we have some sort of Corrugated metal for our roof

Something I can give an expert (ish) opinion on.

Corrugated iron hasn't been used for years, the 1970s was probably the last time it was used en masse in the UK. I started work in the late 80s as a roof sheeter and building cladder. At this time the most common material was steel sheeting with a painted plastic coating much along the lines of the colourful industrial estates that still exist today. Also at the time we were doing a lot of refurbishment work on asbestos sheeted buildings. These were usually replaced by "Asbestolux" sheets which looked the same, smelled the same when cut (stink) but were a "little" bit safer (the main ingredient was cement).
Nowadays most sheet materials have been replaced by composite panels which are an all in one unit that encompass the lining sheet, insulation and top sheet into one.. most of the "out of town" retail parks are now built with these.
The steel frames that support all these construction types have remained exactly the same through the years.
