next time you're going to some live performance or other.....wear some latex gloves....when you have to clap through all the encores, you will get twice the volume with half the effort...or....you can drown out all those around you, if you need to make an impression.......

I discovered the origin of the annoying whooping, cheering & whistling from your typical audience during a visit to Universal Studios in Florida back in the 1980s. We went to see a TV show being recorded not realising that we would be part of the studio audience. We were urged by the idiot floor manager to cheer, shout, whoop & whistle on his signals. He had boards showing the type of applause he wanted & made frantic hand signals to increase or reduce the volume. We even had to rehearse all this nonsense before the show started.

Like most of the audience I'd never heard of the personality hosting the show but from their reaction to his every remark you would be forgiven for thinking he was a superstar.

There you have the secret of the typical "live" TV studio audience.

Every now and again I get a program on my BBC Radio, (or Television), which involves an audience...

...at the sound of the first whoop, or whistle, the "Off button" immediately gets pressed for the remainder of the program...

I just wish that the BBC, etc, could automatically detect that I have abandoned their silly, annoying program, with their silly, annoying audience!... ...!

I just remembered that whistling was not encouraged as it played havoc with the sound balance & the sound engineer's lug'oles. That is the origin of the awful whooping that was the preferred alternative.

We are already suffering the Whoopers and Whistlers in the Studio Audience, (imported from "somewhere"), that we never used to suffer in the past.
They just used to clap, or laugh, when necessary...with no added razzmatazz and noise!......!

It's been downhill ever since.

At the show I referred to it was explained to us that loud whistles overloaded the sound recording equipment. They suggested that we whooped instead. Not everyone can whistle but almost everyone can whoop. This was the very first time in my life that I had experienced anything like it.

As far as I know that is the origin of the awful whooping audiences we're plagued with today. I've even heard them at classical concerts. It completely spoils the show for me.
