A small request

Postby ozzy72 » Sat Aug 29, 2009 2:56 am

Guys, there have been a few complaints lately about images being posted that aren't working. Whilst Firefox can cope with ANYTHING ('cos it is the best browser in the universe), some people are having issues with other browsers if you put spaces in the name of the image, or percentage signs and the like.
Please can you just make image names using JUST numbers and letters and nothing else. It makes it easier for all of us ;)

Many thanks
Ozzy

The important thing is no spaces. This has been a problem with file names on this forum for as long as I can remember.

If you wish to separate words use hyphens or underscores.

Firefox usually copes with broken image links (NOT ALWAYS!) but the simple way to fix it is to replace the spaces in the links with %20

For example:

This Image.jpg
This%20Image.jpg

The %20 counts as a space but we just don't see it. So if you click a picture and you can't see it for the spaces, just replace the spaces with that.

The trouble with using the % is that IE and Opera sometimes get their knickers in a twist, hence why only use the underscore ;)

Firefox seems to go nutty whenever underscores are included in the links, mostly for off-site links, I've not seen it used for images though.

Probably best to just avoid spaces... Which I usually do.

Must be your system. I've never had this problem with Firefox, or IE come to that. Almost every image that I post here has an underscore in the file name.

I think that was the whole point of this topic. :P

I think it was on a youtube video on the videos section... It had an underscore and when I clicked it, it converted the underscore to a % sign or something which made it very unhappy.

That usually happens with spaces, not underscores. I've found that videos can sometimes give problems unconnected with file names. More likely the video player software. Here's a typical Wikipedia link complete with underscore & a hyphen for good measure. See if you have problems with it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747-400

No that link is fine. I think after a certain length the YaBB software cuts the link down to stop page stretches, which is probably the cause of the issue. This video is a prime example.

He included a smiley in that link. Nothing to do with YaBB or Firefox. This one should work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMuO-8S_0Wg

PS. A prime example of one of my pet gripes. Not checking what you've posted for mistakes. :P
