I'm guessing that a fair number of people confuse a deep-seated sense of state pride with being dumb hillbillies or just plain rude or some such nonsense.  We don't think we're better than everyone else, we just expect more from ourselves.

All part of the same stereotypical behavior.  I just want to make sure everyone remembers that, since it seems folks are starting to let their own mental landscape take the place of the real thing.

The usual saying is; "We don't think we're better than everyone else, we know we are".

And there the generalizations are.

That saying actually applies to us Brits.

Although you do have a number of Billies, I've been to Texas and would never call any of you a dumb hillbilly -- you haven't an inhabitable hill in the the state.

I've only time I've been in Texas was going through the Dallas Fort Worth Int'l airport twice when I was on leave from Iraq. I'll never forget that huge crowd of people who greeted us.

Although I've met and known a few Texans who were very friendly, i've also been around quite a few Texans who were complete snobs, and had the attitude of, "Well, I'm from Texas". It kinda gets old after a while....

I just got back from a week long business trip in Houston and had the time of my life, drank for free every night in the bars, and the ladies were very friendly  ;)

I can't say the same for quite a few Texan Marines, they have the whole "Don't mess with Texas" thing embedded in their head, so I think it has to do with Texans who aren't in Texas and wish they were  ;D  Can't blame them after my experience  ;D  But some of them need to give it a rest  ::)
