The US MArines have the best PR of any of the services....

FAce it, look at the recruiting adds... except for the Marines, all the others harp on the opportunities their service can give the recruit...  The MArines - their recruiting is "You MAY, just MAY, be good enough to be a Marine... I DARE you to try...."

(and before anyone starts arguing that I'm dissing the Marines, I'm a proud father of a US MArine Officer.", so I am a wee bit biased in favor of the Marines)

does the United States Marine Corps take their rank structure from the Navy or the Army?
"From the shores of Montezuma" (Mexican brigands) "to the shores of Tripoli" (U.S. Marine assault on Barbary pirate factions); not nearly as restricted as Navy admirals, Marines engage in air, on sea or land -- generally speaking.

That is why my beloved MARINES guard the President of the United States of America. So no rouge general from the Army or the Airforce, or an Admiral can throw a coup.

But what if a rouge Marine decides to throw a coup?

I'm not sure a red French marine would be much of a threat -- a rogue red marine's another matter... :P ;)

Duly note, Mr. Romulus, ...many times it was brought before congress to discuss disbanding the Marine Corps, but for good reason that hasn't happened.
They've never managed to keep them in one place long enough to disband them.
