In prior eras these things were blamed on leprechauns, elves and various other sprites.

I think somewhere in another universe, a hole opens in the sky and pencils, screws, and lost socks fall onto these huge piles... ;D
Conversely, there have been reports of rainfalls of eggs, frogs, tadpoles, etc. (perhaps there was an actual origin of it raining cats and dogs). There is a theory, however, that frogs' eggs and tadpoles can be taken into the atmosphere with minor air anomalies; tornadoes and hurricanes/typhoons can put normally ground-bound objects into the atmosphere from whence they fall elsewhere.

after long hours of quantum physics studies and theorizing, i came to the conclusion that our neighboring parallel universe must have as it's fundamental elements the following particles:

Bic pen caps & butts (and occasionally pieces of the shaft itself)
Umbrellas
Guitar picks
The sock that matches the one in your hand
that screwdriver

occasionally a rift will open between this universe and it's neighbor, most likely triggered by the act of one of these fundamental elements falling to the ground on this universe... it will fall into this rift before it's hits the ground on our universe, and, for all effects, disappear
