New tax?

He doesn't want to raise the gas tax, so lets just create a whole new tax on top of it.  Does it make anyone a little nervous the government wants to install GPS trackers in all vehicles?

This is on the cards for the UK too, however you are more likely not to have it than us. The present UK government is absolutely obsessed with tracking your every move, CCTV (currently 1 camera to ever 12 people!!!!), emails, phone records, ID card to come, and a mileage tax, that will also tell the exact position of your vehicle 24/7

Matt (who ran away UK 10 years ago :D)

All I can think is that civilization as a whole is on its way to a breakdown.  It seems every government now feels it is obligated to imprison its own citizens.

Wow, my 1999 Chevy Silverado 4 X 4 sits in my driveway 99% of the time. Since I've become disabled, I only drive it every other week to keep the battery up. I rarely drive it more than 3,000 miles a year and the guys at the inspection station have a pool every years to see how many miles I make every year. Last year it was 1,200.

My odometer just rolled over 57,000 miles on a 1999 model. I'd love to sell it, but the wife insists that we keep it "Just in case" we need it. The ole pack rat mentality strikes again.....lmao. But, what the heck, it's paid for and she's a good looking little short bed..... :)

So let em' tax away...... :P

"Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he wants to consider taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn." Aren't those two directly related to one another, more or less? Perhaps not with hybrid vehicles, but still.... ::) I guess it isn't enough that we already pay a gas tax and excise tax.
"Other motorists say it eliminates an incentive to drive more fuel-efficient cars since gas guzzlers will be taxed at the same rate as fuel sippers." Right-ee-oh!
It would be much more proactive to first eliminate all the waste and then see how much revenue is available.....Yeah, right. Like that'll ever happen! ;D ;D ;D
I would place an emmisions tax on Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. He looks like a flatulating blowhard. ;)

If they wanted to increase revenue, I could easily stomach a 5 cent/gallon tax increase.  I doubt placing these tracking devices on the cars have anything to do with making money though.  How much would it cost to even implement such a system.

Wouldn't cost too much as the system is partially in place, GM's onstar could easily be adapted to this, and in the benefit of the company, they could get a kickback from the government for providing the info. :-/

When citizens or companies face lower income.. they're forced to cut expenses..

Why is it almost never even brought up as an option for governments ?

Our government is so loaded with bloat, corruption and waste, it bends the mind (and they just passed a bill to add to it all, greatly).

The dilema here (in it's simplest form), is that people are making and spending less.. so tax revenue will go down..

Eh...its been this way for a long time...if they give you a break somewhere they take it back somewhere else ::)

Last year there was a tax break for home owners on property taxes...but they made up for it and then some this year with many single people paying into the state instead of getting a refund :-[

All part of the game that no average citizen wins :-[
