Of course, but sonar gives you position away so it is not often used. Passive acoustics are they way they navigate. Back in the days of the cold war this was a common-ish occurrence, but due to national security was not reported. The hungry needs of the world wide web seems to negate that quite often in todays "I have got a story to sell" society. We now have one sub less to it's thing and we have to advertise it What happened to the days of "We don't comment on submarine operations"?

What's funniest about this boo-boo is that in a way, it was a huge success. Both subs and crews were evenly matched and very successful in their ability to avoid detection by the other.

Ok, something that got me in the story:

..It did not say exactly when, where or how the accident occurred...

Ok I understand they wont tell us when or where... but the how? That should be fairly simple,

"One sub was there, along with the other, then at the same moment, they bumped into each other."
