Agreed.  In my two tours over there, I would say got the general impression that life is cheap in that region.


IMHO, I believe it is partially based in the rough, rugged life of a culture living in desert conditions. But also partially related to the domintant religion, one that believes if a man dies, thats what God wants... thats is what is meant to be. People of that faith also have a limited view of the future. Whatever happens happens, because God wants it that way. That does not mean they do not plan or look to the future, but I think they believe thier own ability to effect the future is limited.

Strangely enough, as an outsider, there are many things about the faith itself (not all of those that CLAIM to follow it) that I admire.

I resist going into this further, for fear of violating forum rules on discussion of religion.

The workers' families will eat better until it's done, and once it's finished many more jobs will be created. Does a lot more good than shoveling money into refugee camps... I don't like it any more than anybody else, but the sad irony of poverty is that you can't eradicate it with money.

Imagine the steel workers at that height, and in areas of the world where schedules over ride safety. The highest exterior work I've done is around 90 feet and that scared the beejeevers outa me at least for the first few hours every morning.  :P

Just part of the rapid development in the East.  The US experienced a similar boom with close competition for the tallest in the world.  I must admitt though, I'm not so proud to have contributed $40 today to the project by fueling up today
