From what I gather at the time of the original report, he took off from Nevada to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains...(I believe en route to Sacremento, California).

In the FS 2004 Sim following his route I had to reach 20,000 feet ASL to clear the mountain range...highest spot = 15,000 feet ASL
...very high and very cold for a little GA Piston Prop......!
