OK, who's being funny with the autosuggestion? I'm on my way in to work and, just above the tree tops, a blue flash streaks across in front of me... sheesh. Within a few seconds, aha... a car is coming from the street to the left.
Must have been some strange sort of reflection above the treetops but... hmn, the car's lights are the old yellow ones.
::)

Meteor?
'Twas my first guess but an angle of attack parallel to the ground and just bright enough to light the tree tops seemed a little strange. Plus, it truly streaked by in a flash which is why I considered it a possible reflection (even though lighting from above and not below seems a bit contrary if there's nothing above to be reflecting it -- the sky was very clear).

Tonight's sighting was a little more tense. There was a little fellow in the road about fifteen feet before me and I confused him with my lights; made him go in a circle with a car coming (they honked their horn as they passed, as if we wanted to further rile the little fellow >:(). Anyway, I waited until the skunk cleared the street before proceeding.

Light can produce some very strange effects. From your original account it's most likely that this was diffused rays from the car headlights through the treetops. (Auto-suggestion from reading this topic could have also played its part.) I wasn't there of course so can't really visualise it. The same goes for the subject of this topic. As much as I would have liked to see it I can only propose the most likely explanation.*

I actually saw a UFO back in the late 1960s. A bright light passed us within an estimated 1,000 feet & took several minutes to disappear from view. My future wife was with me & will confirm I was not dreaming or on some mind-altering substance. Sightings were reported from wide areas of Sussex & Kent but we never saw a satisfactory explanation for it. I still have no idea what it was but never for a single moment considered it to be connected with visitors from outer space.

*PS. I mentioned that the Worthing Fiesta was in full swing during that weekend. This included a seafront funfair. One of the rides featured bright flashing strobes. I took photos of the strange effects of these some years ago.  Reflections from the strobes seen from a distance could well have been the cause of some of those reports. http://www.worthingherald.co.uk/worthing/VIDEO-Worthing-Lions-Festival-gets.4328525.jp
