Geez, what happened?  Was this today?  I have no idea where or what that is, but that fire looks vicious!

Here's the report. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/somerset/7528165.stm
Weston is where the helicopter fly-in was that Mic & MrJake posted photos of.

such a shame............insurance job!! "cough" "cough" :-X

You would know more than me about that. :P According to that BBC report it had only just been refurbished.

Piers seem to be prone to catching fire. Reminds me of Brighton's West Pier (suspected arson) & the one at Southend. Our local pier at Worthing was destroyed by fire in 1933. Part of the rebuilt pier was blown up in 1940 to prevent it being used by German invasion forces.

I had some *cough* "fun" *cough* under that pier when I stayed in Weston in 1989 when I was working in Patchway, Bristol...

Another memory up in smoke..

Funny you should mention such things, but my dad was reminiscing yesterday about said pier..........he lost a small piece of fruit at low tide right under all that mess ;D

It was a deep fat fryer that apparently caused the fire. I've worked in many kitchens and the only reason for these going up in smoke if that the thermostat is faulty or tamperd with. You can leave them on all night they'll just reach temperature then cut out, reach temperature then cut out and so on. As for rebferishment they only stuck in a new go kart ride and did a lick of paint here and there. So you just purchased Weston pier for millions about three months ago and your away on holiday and it go up in smoke

There was only one person at the scene at the time the fire started, he removed gas bottles. Still the new pier should be alot better, at least it got rid of after burner and outrun ;D ;D(it was that old) ;)
