I just saw that too, and it pissed me off. They neglected to discribe the other reasons for go-arounds, such as pilot errors. Blaming the whole thing on ATC. That passenger pissed me off too. You know how many times that happens to my dad on business trips? A lot. You don't see him running off to the news to get go arounds banned. You know what, if you don't like, drive.

Oh and get the facts about planes manouvers strait first, too.

I can understand his concern.  We (as aircraft enthusiasts) are perfectly used to go-arounds.  We know what they are, and when they happen, we know what's going on.  But your average civilian is no more familiar with go-arounds than what the TCAS is for.  They just know when they're scared, and that they want to prevent that fear if at all possible.

:P

If they're too dense to grasp the need for a go-around, I guess they don't realize how much scarier it can be when the crew also refuses to go around. ;D

This matter can be settled quickly if an airline is established that prohibits go-arounds... all of these idiots would fly only with this airline, and soon they'd all be removed from the gene pool, along with pilots foolish enough to fly under such rules.  :)

Actually, what would be more likely is that the aircraft would stay in the air an hour or two longer so that ATC would be SURE there wouldn't be a go-around when they came in to land.  Now THAT would really piss someone off . . . ::)

I'm sorry but what is the alternative option to a go around???

Lets say you are landing, there is another plane on the runway, would you rather...
A) Go around
or
B) CRASH!!!!

The other alternative is to give landing permission ONLY when the aircraft on final has completely cleared the runway - adding 15 to 20 mins to every flight, which stacks up when you take into the account all the flights we have now days.

Dontreadmyusername makes a good point.

If you were driving down the motorway at 80mph and there is a slower car just pulling out in front of you (so say your 737 landing and a C172 taking off as an example) would you hope the slower one will speed up and take off leaving enough time to make the runway safe for landing... or do you go and ram it. If it is with another larger aircraft then it can be dangerous can't it? The ripples through the air from the wings can cause problems can't they?

The passenger doesn't realise that go-arounds are to stop poor mr slow from getting a whole lotta your aircraft and your body from hitting them.

machineman makes a very good point (which the tv dude obviously misses). And its maybe the best description for the majority of go-arounds that happen

Just be happy that they didnt show

There are a number of things that can cause a go-around, and they are almost always surprises, which makes it impossible to avoid them by sequencing or whatever. The go-around is not an emergency maneuver, it is just an option, and usually a wise choice.
I have yet to experience ago-around in an airliner, but it wouldn't bother me. And I have no regrets about every go-around I've made as PIC, unlike some of the landings I've made!  ;D
