while I am glad he kept it, I think its a little fortunate for him, since he's' serving with the american airforce regardless of his association with the RAF. He should have been required to follow the USAF rules. I'm not sure how popular it'll make him with the other AF pilots, that or maybe it'll help his position.

When I was in the British Army, and we were attached to another Company or Regiment,  British or Foreign, we always followed the rules of our OWN Regiment......!

P.S. ...don't you just love the expression;"Superior Officer".... ...!

...I still have fond memories of what I used to call them.... ...!
