Are there any good online firearm dealers that sell surplus rifles, or did you simply shop around your local gun shops?
I've got a couple Remington 700 rifles, in 7mm, and .243 calibers. Out of curiosity, how much more of a recoil would a German K98 8mm Mauser have compared to a 7mm rifle. I've never fired an 8mm cartridge. Is the price of 8mm ammo usually run the same, higher, or lower than other hunting rifle caliber ammo?
For surplus stuff, the best deals I have seen have been at gun shows. They typically have a lot of military surplus stuff...you'll see lots of Mausers, Enfields, Mosins, '03 Springfields, and even some M1s. The only website that I really look at for guns is
http://www.gunbroker.com. I have never bought anything off there because shipping guns is a pain. I use it for price checking and drooling purposes. Its basically the eBay for guns.
Well, I've never fired a 7mm rifle so I can't really compare them. The 8mm seems to have similar firing characteristics to a bolt action 30.06. My little brother has a Ruger 30.06 that kicks a lot harder than the Mauser. The Mauser is a heavy and well balanced gun, so it absorbers some of the force...but like all bolt actions it does have some recoil because there is nothing moving to absorb force (unlike the M1 Garand 30.06 which has almost no recoil). All and all, the Mauser does give a pretty good thump, but it is nothing that has bothered me. The only time I thought it was uncomfortable to shoot was when I was shooting it off a bench and as a result I couldn't pull it tight against my shoulder.
