I found this as a comment posted at Sky News, but it just about sums it all up:

Bing Bong" "Ladies & Gentleman this is your captain speaking, we are now traveling at 33,000 ft and you now have permission to switch on your mobile phone"

And this is all you will hear;

"HELLO MATE, IT'S RICKY MATE, GUESS WHERE I AM MATE, I'M ON A PLANE"
"TENERIFE TWO WEEKS HOTEL"
"YEAH, ALL INCLUSIVE, CALLED LOS CHAV'OS"
"WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT I'M GOING UP IN THE WORLD"?
"OH YOU MEAN COZ I'M CALLING YOU FROM FIRTY FREE FOUSAND FEET, GOOD ONE MATE"
WHAT YOU UP TO?"
"NOOOOOO, REALLY MATE....OK, CALL YOU WHEN I GET IN"

Times this conversation 400 times on a Thomson or First Choice plane over the summer.... This has been your Captain speaking.... Now enjoy the in flight movie, if you can hear it"

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

LOL... ;D...!

The trubble' is, these Mobile-Phonin' idiots have no sense of their unbelievable stupidity...

...so...

...apart from tossing them out of the Aircraft at 40,000 feet AGL, it's difficult to see an end to the problem during the remainder of the flight...!

Paul... ;).... ;D...

P.S. ..any other (painful) suggestions?.. ::)...;)...!

Chucking them out wouldn't make a blind bit of difference; they'd still be nattering allllll the way down to the ground; in fact they'd probably call their insurance comapny; "DO YOU COVER DEATH BY LACK OF PARACHUTE?!"  ;D

And of course, there'll always be the incessant "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?"....think about this. If he could hear him he won't be able to any more because he'll have just gone deaf from the shouting; if he couldn't hear him he still won't be able to hear him and won't be able to answer the question. It is the single most pointless thing to say on a phone. ;D

"I also call on airlines and operators to create the right conditions on board aircraft to ensure that those who want to use in-flight communication services do not disturb other passengers," she said.

How does she propose they do that? I ask myself. I suggest that all passengers wishing to use the blasted things go outside. >:(

...mmmm....enjoying this "discussion" and would like to change tack just slightly.

There are apparently 17,000 members here on SimV.......there MUST be some who agree with having mobile/cell phones on flights! ...and a few of those must have read these posts.

Not a word (so far) from even one of them........come on lads if you disagree with the points made here then let's be hearing from you.....we haven't heard of a single argument "for" this particular bit of lunatic legislation..............commoner ;)

BTW Rav......like your idea of a phone area....... ;D ;D

Don't undervalue us commoner, there are 27,000 members :D
Having a vested interest in the subject (having to fix it when it goes wrong), I have been following this subject since it came up. I have seen hundreds of posts against it and only a couple for. One was written in text speak, so it was probably "Ricky" - see my reply a few posts earlier and the other was from an "anonymous businessman". Maybe the silence is your answer.
There is enough to do on a flight without ringing the world. Most shot haul flights have entertainment today. Also I would not be surprised if most business people are saying a collective but quiet, "oh sh#t", at the though of being pestered senseless during a flight. A flight is about the only time that hey can get away from the office and get a couple of hours to themselves.

I wouldn't take too much notice of that. Statistics can be misleading & according to my (very rough) calculations approximately 15,000 registered members of this forum haven't made a single post. Pages 463 - 1101 with 24 entries on each. http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=ml;sort=posts;letter=;start=11550
For every opinionated old sod like me with too much time on his hands there are plenty that keep quiet. :P

Many of those that have posted more than once probably don't know this part of the forum exists.
Members come & go & some of the old regulars haven't posted for years. It's only a guess but I reckon the number posting in this section of the forum on a regular basis averages well below 100.

Don't worry Hager, it is the opinionated old sods that make this place fun :D (and we can all be from time to time) But you are right about members. They are members, but then we also have Members. For me, the people who hang about here are the members.

I think its a pretty bad idea, i ride in a train for 1 hour and 20 minutes everyday, and i never ever have appreciated it if someone else was calling aloud, i only called twice, because it was required at that time, although im terribly ashamed at doing so. I really cant imagine why someone would want to call in the air.
