Had this trouble on Friday night, the wife wanted me to go and clear the steps and path in front of the flat during a blizzard. Captain Brainy here ran down to the corner shop and got a kilo of salt first. Then once I'd cleared a patch I put some salt down. Kept doing this, Saturday morning it was a piece of cake to clear the remainder and NO ice to contend with 8-)

I wish we had snow like that. Last time I saw some snow was Januari 2006. And that was gone in a week or so. Would be nice to have a white Christmas again. It's a long time ago that happened.
Crash

I'd scoop one standard shovelful at a time; I think shoveling the entire walkway in one scoop would take one huge shovel and some mechanical assistance.Question.....Would you shovel the snow four or five times (every three or four inches or so) or wait till it's done snowing, and break your back by shoveling it all at once?

I try to avoid the wizz-cicles myself, but at least ya made home. (with all the appendages you left with, hopefully)
Whaddaya-gonnado?
