he was lucky to get 3 1/2 (roughly) hours sleep per night, not including hygene, meals, home/work travel, and time with the wife. this accounts to 22 hours per week (168 - 147) he was missing out on 34 hours of sleep.


*and this is by American work standards, but for anybody, thats pushing some limits.

And this is why I take advantage of my contract so often while working here in Japan.  My Japanese colleagues will work 10, 12, 14 hour days without question.  Do any of them like it?  Nooo.  They just don't know how to say no to work.  The weird thing is, I have watched them (I used to try and stay at work as long as they did until I just said, fong it, and went home at my contracted time to go drink and such) working these long hours, and it isn't like they get a lot done.  So much of their day is wasted on paperwork and bureaucracy.  Really, all they end up doing is missing out on family time and sleep.

Work is a means to an end.  It shouldn't just be a mean end.  :(

When I was in Japan we had several earthquakes. One of them damaged a road to one of the Warehouse of Toyota. Because they couldn't move the parts the nearby toyota factory was shut down and a lot of workers didn't have to work. Since a lot of people in that area worked for Toyota it meant that a lot of them had a few days off... All being well of course untill we heard that they'd have to make those days up in the weekends. So basically you are a worker and you can't work because there are no parts for you to work on and because of that you'll have to work weekends!

My friend is at a private language institution and he said that most of his teachers often work long hours during the week and also a lot in the weekend!

Compared to Holland and I think most western countries, Japan is a true 24h Economy, Compared to Holland it's certainly is.. Shopping malls and supermarkets open till 23:00 on all days... Diners till 5:00AM and loadsa 7-11's The level of service compared to Durch diners for instance is incredible. In most restaurants the waiter interrupts you in your conversation asking you if you want to order a drink and they keep doing that throughout the meals. In Japan you had a bell which you could ring and they'd come up running...and no I'm not kidding Running! And when they were there they sat down on their knees making themselves lower than the customer then you placed you order Also there is usually cool water and/or tea free of charge.  And finally Tipping? Not done in Japan! Actually while we were in Tokyo they had a cmapaign running in the subways call " Keep the Change" In Holland when one goes out for Dinner it serves several purposes. the first of course is feeding but more than that it is usually also meant for some rest and relaxation often als being together with a loved one and friends and or/family. In Japan most of what we saw is that Dinner was meant for feeding and nothing else... People came/ordered/ate and left usually within 20 mins ( and no we didn't go to many fast foods) While we westerners really took our time and always were the slowest people in there... Quite a culture difference
