I knew that couch was a more general term but I've checked the etymology:
couch was an earlier English and French term for something to lay on, not necessarily having attached upholstery. A sofa is from Arabic and applies to an upholstered couch, not just cushioned.

Well, you see it all started in France in 1731 when famed furniture designer Le'Zee Du Bois invented the reclining chair. The chair quickly became popular in the North American colonies where it's name was shortened to Lazy Boy. Shortly after buying one of the chairs, Joseph Sofa decided to modify one to seat 3 people. His new piece of furniture which bore his name was soon common place in living rooms around the world. It's popularity even reached as far as India where a common basket weaver by the name of Ramal Hasil Settee set out to copy the Sofa in the wicker material he worked with on a daily basis. Though the Settee proved to be on of the most uncomfortable pieces of furniture in human history, it still remains popular to this day. I'm not sure about the love seat, it may have been designed in England by the reclusive Lord Bernard Loveseat, though many experts argue that this similarity between names was mere coincidence. Oh yeah, and "Couch" is French for "a large padded chair that seats three to four people".

...I swear, that's how it happened. :P :-/

Wonderful... Alrot will have Venezuelans learning the history of reclining via The History of Tacit.
To further incorrect your errant research, the loveseat was not named for Lord Loveseat but, rather, Marquis Robert Lovesette whose name had nothing to do with love or sitting; as per norm, the English misunderstood and mispronounced his name.
It was a similar result with Pomme d'Moor being translated as "Love Apple" (pomme d'amore) whereas, in fact, the French term for tomato actually should be translated as Apple of [the] Moor (again, not pertaining to wasteland or marsh but to Arabic Berbers, especially those originating from Mauritania).
::)

That in blue  Is really true.
