Braces

[smiley=thumbdown.gif] Got rubber bands on. I can't talk  [smiley=cry.gif]  annoying. They are terrible. I'm getting em off soon though. Any hints on how to keep the throbbing pain down?

2 years of braces sucked like hell, but you learn to ignore the pain....

haha, i remember that! Give it a few days and the pain does go away!!

the thing they don't tell you with braces is that when you finally get them off you have to wear a retainer like every other day for the rest of your life, or the teeth just move back out of place...that annoyed me...!! though i haven't worn mine for about a month and they still look fine!

good luck though, i does get better, promise  ;)

I feel for you... I went through 8 years of orthodontics, including extration of 4 permanent teeth, an appliance designed to widen my upper palate (owww), and of course, full upper and lower braces with enough wire to stop an advancing army and a whole bunch of rubber bands.
The damn things would often break or pop off, I couldn't talk, and yes, after they hammered those things onto my teeth it hurt like hell for about a week.

Aspirin or Tylenol will help, but the pain should fade. Some more advice: keep everything extra clean in there, and stay away from candy, especially caramel.

Hang in there- soon it will be over, your gnarly choppers will be all straightened out, and meanwhile just be thankful you don't have to wear a big strap on your head... that cheered me up when I saw some poor kid with one of those.  ;D

I probably should have had braces, but never did. I don't know if it's because my parents couldn't afford it or because, and I remember this clearly, I told them that I did not want metal in my mouth and if I ever found myself with braces I would remove them myself with pliers. Maybe it's just me, but I could never see how having straight teeth was worth the years of pain and discomfort. :-?

That's true...I'd rather have misaligned teeth rather than getting braces...I didn't get braces because I had heard they remove your molars...I'm honestly not a big fan of getting my teeth pulled out

My sister had braces. She found them awful as well... I'm never having braces, if I can help it. A few of my teeth arnt straight, but hell I'll live with it. It makes me... unique  ;)

I wore braces for two and a half years. What really sucked is that since my parents couldn't afford them, my dad took a couple grand out of my life savings (I was only 16) to help pay for them...

After I had them removed, I had to wear the removable retainer 24/7 for about six months, and afterwards, I only had to wear them at night. Now, I don't have to, but i'll occasionally wear them at night just to ensure my teeth don't adjust too much

Nice. My parents paid $5000 dollars for my braces. They coulda just got me a computer. Braces hurt and suck. But, on the upside, I used to get headaches because of my extreme jaw placement without braces, and with my jaw pulled forward with the rubber bands, no more headaches!

That's one reason why orthodontic procedures are often a real good thing... it's not always just to have "perfect" teeth.

My problems were potentially very serious- had I been left alone, I would look and speak very differently (not in a good way, either), and maybe had to get more painful procedures later.

I had a narrow upper palate (shaped like a left palate, but with no gap),which was creating crowding among my upper teeth, a lower front tooth that had migrated about 1/4" behind the others so it was under my tongue, and a serious overbite.
 I used to have a plaster cast of my first impression ever- years after getting my braces off, I looked at that tangle of choppers and decided it was worth it.

Braces and appliances are much easier to deal with nowadays; I would advise anyone considering it to go for it.
