How different it could have been...

Postby C » Mon Jul 23, 2007 6:32 am

It's a funny old world. Tha last King of Afghanistan has passed away. Deposed in 1973 it just shows what "progress" his deposers made the the country;

Many Afghans had a deep love and respect for Zahir Shah, whose lengthy reign was associated with peace, security and modest political reform. His 40-year reign saw women receiving education and voting in elections, and a free press.

Well, most people who wanted the best for their people have been deposed one way or another.

Rabin, Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama...

Rejecting ideas because they weren't created locally or because they're from other ethnic or racial groups is nothing new.  But the modern world waits for noone.  Just ask Japan...

Depends.  Were you living in Japan back in the late 1800's-early 1900's?  :)

No, but my major in university was anthropology with a intensive focus on Japanese culture, especially from the Meiji Restoration onward.  I have a pretty piece of paper that tells me I better darn well know a thing or two about Japan, because I'll be paying off the school loans until I am 45 (and I am 35 now). :'(

I was just curious, because I saw you mention about Japan and such.  I always love chatting with people about Japan, but I could not figure out the exact context of your post.  It could mean so many things . . . :o ;D

John mentioned that people in the east viewed modernism as a western idea, implying that they are resistant of modernism.  It's hard to say what "modernism" is (or what "east" is) but certainly Japan is a good example of a country that tried, ultimately unsuccessfully, to shut out the rest of the world and their ideas.  And as you know they were eventually and suddenly thrust in to the modern world.

As Japan shows, you can isolate yourself, perhaps for centuries, however eventually the world will drag you in to the fold.  I suspect the same is happening right now in "the east".

Boy, I didn't know we were going to talk about wet rice cultivation techniques.  I'll have to study up.  :)
