I think these people don't give two monkeys about the traffic.

What proportion of the front line troops (certainly) and non-coms in the armed forces come from working class backgrounds? Probably too many to have any families visiting in an area where you'd need to be a millionaire twice over to own a house. The all ought to have their houses repossessed and be moved into a local council flat. Or maybe an appointment with an estate agent in Basra or Kandahar.

What does that have anything to do anything?  Because you live in Germany and may have travelled to other european countries does not make you an expert on all things "outside of america".

The fact that they have served their country of their own volition, knowing the risks, makes them more important than the nimbys complaining about half a dozen extra cars in the area.

Sorry Bjorn, but My dad served in the british army for 25 years (including time in several warzones), to this day he wishes he hadn't left. My cousin is in love with his job in the army, and thats included a back to back tour of Iraq (the one i posted the commendation post about) I have several other cousins all who have willingly and gratefully served the various other armed forces, and my uncle in Canada served with the army/ special forces in such places as the Falklands.
Maybe the forced service has gotten you and your tank buddies bitter towards military service. But please dont lump your opinion on those who are happy to have served.

What ticks me off is that fat senators earn around $165,000 for sitting on there fat arses all day argueing with other fat old senators about how much more money they should tax us for, while an army private of <2 years expierences makes a puny $15,282 for putting their life on the line just so that the fat bueracrats can live in their plush 5,000 sq. foot mainsions counting ther dough!!

Just to put that in persepective..... There are 535 US Representatives and Senators.... their total combined salary totals $88,382,000 . But, lets not forget lobbying! In 2005 $2.36 billion was spent on lobbying governement officials! THATS $200 MILLION A MONTH! ($77 a second!) Oh and the president makes $400,000 and then ontop of that you can add on the salarys of the vice president, cabinet, and ambasadors.... All of these salaries are insanely high.

That story doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I deal on a daily basis with the people of Ashtead and it's surrounding areas, (Epsom and Leatherhead) and believe me, they are the snobbiest people* I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. NIMBY's.. the lot of them.

You should have seen the protests when the Government decided to construct the M25 in the 80's. It cut almost through the middle of Ashtead and Leatherhead... they lost out big time over that one

I served and am glad I did. A wonderful time (most of the time) and many great experiences and friendships. As for the working class being the great unwashed I'd disagree, by the end of basic training most of the lower life-forms got out of the bath to pee
