Ive done a bit of research for you...a saver return, leaving paddington at 6:30 tomorrow morning and getting to Swindon at 7:26, returning from Swindon at 20:11 and arriving back at 21:14 would cost

I wouldnt advise hitchiking, but theres nothing wrong with taking trains.....I've been to loads of places on my own on the train.....dont underestimate 15 year olds
