is there anyone currently serving in an army/navy/air force/etc. on the forums?

erm i think splat is and esselbech is currently stationed in iraq but they are with US military

Yep, i'm here in Iraq, but you're right, i'm in the US Army, so things may be different between the British and American military regarding policies with females. In the US Army, you might not see any female infantry 'grunts', but they do serve a vital role in Admin, Medical, Aviation, Mechanics, Military Police, as well as many other areas. I've even seen a lot of females who were in the chemical corps, and that's no joke. I know I've met quite a few female soldiers & marines who could kick my a$$... ;D
There is no 'front line' here in Iraq, so there are very few areas where you are completely safe. We have a few female mechanics who role with us all the time, who have been shot at, blown up, and when we get hit, they're on the ground helping us recover blown up vehicles. One time, one of our female mechanics helped us get rid of a roadside bomb. On the other hand, not all guys are gung ho as much as you think. I've met plenty of guys here who don't know how to operate a machine gun, and are happy staying inside the wire.

But my advice is, if you're unsure of what you want to do, do some research. It wouldn't hurt talking to everyone you know has served, or is serving in the military.

thanks. would you mind if i asked you about the military? i know youre with a different military organisation but you can probably still give me so useful info

I'm sure some of the British members here who have been in the military could answer your questions better than I could, but ask away... ;)

thanks, i hope my questions arent too stupid.

1. is the training really really hard? - im not particularly great at running or sprinting but i am very very determined and stubborn.

2. do they yell at you lots?

3. do you have time for keeping in touch with family and friends? - (akula will know) i value my friends and family, and get really lonely and shy when with strangers and no loved faces.

4. would it be worth going to an army based 6th form college rather than the one at my current school? - the place im at is beyond boring and i want to meet some new faces.

5. do you have to be top of the class at maths/IT/science and languages? i have a crap science teacher, im looking at high B in maths and high C - B in french. i didnt even attempt IT cos technology hates me.

6. is there lots of difficult paperwork? - im not fantastically organised, im trying to be, and i feel that it would help me, but the responsibility seems very daunting.  :-[

7. were you uncertain whether it was what you wanted when you first joined? - i really want to join for the excitement team work and activity, but i feel tied to what my family want me to do, i dont want them to be angry with me for wanting to be part of the army.

8. are there many jobs you can get in the civillian world if you choose to leave the military or do you have to do more education?

9. finally, is it fun?

thanks  :)

ive currently got a mate doing his british army training, and another waiting to be given a date to start his RMC training. they are twins and the one in the army is tough as, he loves it, everytime i see him he is full of it, the NCO's do yell alot according to him but its all motivational from what he has said, ofcourse they yell cos some tard screws up but he said the majority of his yellings have been motivational based.  their is quite a bit of running involved but not much sprinting. the problem with going to an Army 6th form is that you may then be set that once you pass your exams you are in the army as they have sponsoured you. thats not wise as you amy change your mind, stay at a normal 6th form college and make your decisions half way through year 13. A levels are possibly the most important exams you will sit in your life as they determine what you do with the rest of your life.

:-?

they said my GCSE's were the most important exams id ever sit...

*confuzzled*  :-[

meh...well, if theyre the most important i shall look into it more deeply before making any descisions...

hmm...i think i will locate the nearest amy job centre and find out whether the rules are the same as the ones for the college where they teach you about the jobs...it said you could leave any time in the first six months as long as you give fourteen days warning if you decide its not for you...hmmm...thanks though,

confused but still curious  :-/

Quick thing about exams.

GCSE's matter squat. Just so long as you get good enough results to do your chosen A Levels.

A Levels also matter squat. Just so long as your results are good enough to do your chosen degree at University.

Finally, the degree matters very little. Most jobs don't care what you did, or what the result was. Just so long as you've got one.

If you are thinking about the Army then I would suggest you look at Sandhurst and getting a commission. There ain't much of a future in being a squaddie.

In the US Army Basic Training, it's challenging, but if you want it, it's not impossible.

2. do they yell at you lots?

Of course, but you get used to it.

3. do you have time for keeping in touch with family and friends? - (akula will know) i value my friends and family, and get really lonely and shy when with strangers and no loved faces.

We weren't allowed to use the phones untill we graduated Basic, and went into our Advanced Training. But we were allowed to send and recieve mail

4. would it be worth going to an army based 6th form college rather than the one at my current school? - the place im at is beyond boring and i want to meet some new faces.

I don't even know what 6th form college is...

5. do you have to be top of the class at maths/IT/science and languages? i have a crap science teacher, im looking at high B in maths and high C - B in french. i didnt even attempt IT cos technology hates me.

I don't know how the British Military works, but to enlist in the American Military, you need to have a highschool diploma, or a GED.

Or to put it another way:

The Army sends the troops to get shot at whilst the Rodneys sit a fair few miles behind you, not including Lieutenant and Second Lieutenant (Rodney cannon fodder)

Navy, gives all a fair crack at the whip and places all ranks in a steel can to be shot at.

RAF, sends the officers out to get shot at whilst the ground crews wait back at base drinking tea and playing cards.

Matt (12 years RAF ((world class Cribbage and Hunt the #### player 8-))).........I traveled the world, would not give a single day of it back, but would not do it again)

A commission is the is process of becoming an officer. Once you are an officer you are said to "hold a commission". As for the advantage of having one over not, well being an officer, it should not be too hard to work out the advantages over being a squadi.

This has become somewhat delicate :-[ ..............well you probably know of some girls who put it about a bit, now convert that to the army. Failing that, you should ask you mum :-/ I think that there are laws to cover 15 year old girls, grown men and the internet :o
