On the other hand, tapwater is way more controlled than bottlewater...

Yeah, at least with tap water you're guaranteed to get the same crappy tasting, chemically infested water every time you open the valve.

They are a place to put trash.

I'm a bit worried about soil quality in an area of a trash-filled landfill after ~50 years...

It certainly wouldn't be good.

Landfills are a byproduct of our civilization.  What alternatives do we have?  Is anyone willing to give up progress and go back to living in the stone age?  Living in the bronze age won't even do, think of all the harmful fumes smelting bronze would cause.   Greenpeace would have a conniption!  :o

Burning the stuff and filtering the fumes and then put the ashes into a landfill. Problem solved.

Interesting:

That would be a good development, provided it goes beyond the patent stage to practical use stage.  BTW, this is a 32 year old patent.   :-?  Do you know of anyone who is currently doing this?

or....................... We bulid a bunch of rockets (modified Saturn V's would do nicely) Fill them trash and launch em up into space!!! Lauch em with enough fuel to only get out of earth orbit and then let them float off into space! The extra space from the lessened fuel tanks could be filled with more trash!

Same thing applies for all those nasty "green house gasses" instead of cars (or planes, electric plants, and factories) pumping their fumes out into the atmosphere, just put all that stuff into tanks and blast em off with the trash!!!! ;D ;D Sure it'll cost some money but the whole world is pouring billions of dollars into "saving the enviornment", take all that money and put it into this!

Only on a one way trip to the Sun, perhaps.

You would need an awful lot of rockets. ::)

Saturn V, third and largest member of the Saturn family, is a three-stage vehicle capable of sending a 45-ton payload to the moon, or boosting as much as 140 tons into low earth orbit. http://www.apollosaturn.com/sibnews/section1.htm

Overall, England and Wales produce about 435 million tonnes of waste a year http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/aboutus/512398/289428/653535/?lang=_e

:o What are you suggesting here? A 10M Saturn V rocket team to space lift England and Wales? Is this a trip to the Moon or the Sun -- and you are aware that this but a portion of Terran waste? :-[

By my estimations we would need around 2,900,000 Saturn V's with each rocket coming in around $433,333,333 so thats $125,666,665,700,000 or around $125 trillion. For just all of England and Wales! Thats not feasible.... But........ ;D

We can use the SRBs used on the space shuttle!!!! They are reusable!!!! And they have 1.8 times the liftoff thrust of the Saturn V! Thats 1 496.85482 tonnes!!! Just a few modifications to get stuff out of earth orbit, and it would work! I can't find any info on the cost of SRBs, but since there reusable we could just use a few to launch all the trash we want!!

Sh!t...that really is crazy. I cannot imagine that happening in Sydney Australia at the moment - a huge plume of pollution has been found in Warragamba dam...I'm only drinking bottled water now...
