Downright chilly the last few days here in the NYC area, but this evening it's seasonably warm if a little humid.

That's pretty hot for May in La-La Land, but don't worry- it'll normal out for again, then by July it'll be so hot you can't stand it.  ;D

What is 'normal' temperature anyway? Every day the weather forecasters posst the day's high, low and normal high and low temperatures, while some post the days high, low and average high and low temperatures.
How do they know what's normal or average? Recorded temperatures have been around only 150 years or so. Soil samples and ice core samples will yield clues only so far back in history. The earth was probably really, really hot when it was forming. Does this in any way figure into the formula? Do they throw out abnormal highs and lows? Shouldn't they in order to reach a more accurate mean average? Answers, I want answers......... ;D

I think in that context, "normal" and average" are interchangeable. But I could be wrong.

That being the case, they know what's normal or average for the last 150 years or so. It's all they've got . ;D

Something tells me that when your local weather folks are figuring average temps for the area they are not taking the formation of this planet into account. Call it a hunch. ;)
And ice core readings are pretty useless for figuring temps in a small area, especially when that area is thousands of miles from where the samples were taken.

Do they throw out abnormal highs and lows? Shouldn't they in order to reach a more accurate mean average?

That's a good question, and it may lead to an answer to your first:
Maybe "normal" means the average minus "spikes" and "average" means an average derived from all readings... ???

We are having clouds, rain, and smoke here in Jacksonville due to a subtropical storm off the coast and a huge wildfire in southeast GA. At least it's not extremely hot here yet. This time last year it was like 95 everyday here. Now it's like hovering around 70s-80s. I like how you can always look forward to different weather all the time.  Don't worry a1. Just wait a little longer and you might find that the weather may change for the better.  :)

Where I live, it's within the average temps.  However, winter lingered longer that what is usual, so trees didn't bloom until about 3 weeks later than usual.

Well it is about 36'C here so just shy of 100'F!
Summer here often gets up to 42'C (108'F). The highest I've seen here is 46'C (115'F) :o :o :o
