I just put compact flourescents into my bedroom and game room yesterday... 8-)

In my bedroom I don't think it really does much to be eco friendly, I have 2 computers running almost 24/7 with 2 powerstrips filled with otehr junk, a guitar amp and a TV all plugged in elsewhere.   I must be running at a few kilowatts in that room alone ;D

I would try to keep operating florescent bulbs a safe distance (no, the bulbs are not apt to explode) from radios and audio equipment (amps, etc.) to avoid such equipment picking up the discharge hum from the bulbs.

Well there you go then. Following the advice in this thread I went out & purchased myself some of these energy-saving bulbs, at great personal expense I might add. It clearly states on the packaging that they are NOT to be used with dimmer switches, timers or photo-cell circuits.

PS. The blasted things are too long for my lamp shades which means the extra expense of buying new ones. This money-saving racket is going to cost me a fortune at this rate. I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bothered. >:( :(

The dimmer switch thing is because they use an electronic ballast (the ballast is the thing which allows the light bulb to light and stay lit, unlike an incandescent the compact fourescent needs carefully regulated voltage to operate).

WE are beginning to switch my house over to CFLs.  While they cost more, they last much longer, justifiying the increased initial cost.  Add the energy savings, and its a win-win except for the mercury, which shouldnt be an isse once they are used more and recycling centers will be set up for them.

Playing with your naughty pines again, Foz? It's difficult to have a serious, personal relationship with a tree, Mr.Fozbury: most of them branch out and leave. ::)

I was listening to W0KIE satellite radio late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. During the space news portion of the show it was reported that Mars is also warming. In the last 20 years it is estimated to have increased in temperature 1.5

Maybe Humans aren't warming Mars, maybe Martians are warming the Earth and Mars!! :o

On a serious note: If the Earth is warming and so is Mars, that leads me to the question- Has there been any detectable change in the sun? That would explain simultaneous warming on both planets. Also, what about the other planets? Is there a way to tell if Venus and Mercury have experienced similar climate changes?

Yes, there's scientific data indicating the sun is in a hot phase.
