The problem is not that it's secret.  This person was trusted with some irreplacable items, items that were part of our heritage, and sold them on eBay...  ::)

Perhaps it made mention of the Unions use of alien technology, or experimental aircraft (that's right, civil war aircraft!) built with alien technology recovered from the other Roswell in West Virginia in 1845 and that Lincoln was assassinated to cover it up!  :o
