It's a fort, built in roughly from late 1600's to early 1800's.

I'm gonna make a wild guess.  Ft. Ticonderoga?

I had been reading a book on the turning points of warfare, and that was pretty much the zenith of fort design.  An attacker couldn't attack any wall without being exposed to fire from the fort.

Yeah I see what you mean about the design. Now here's a hint about what it is. It is one of the oldest buildings in America. See what you can make out of that.  :)
