Smileys, the new periods.

Doesn't it seem like we tend to use smileys at the end of our sentences these days? Just shows how time is progressing doesn't it?  :)

I don't use emotes that often. Just plain text. Of course, I could come off as standoffish if I don't.

i only use them if i think it may be hard for the reader to tell what my emotion is at a particualr part of a post, which is pretty much what they are designed for.

The whole idea of smileys was to make it clear about what you were saying. As computers tend to be lacking in body language (except when you're kickin' them and saying rude things about Windows crashing AGAIN) it was so people could tell the meaning of the words rather than misunderstanding them and taking things in a manner they were not intended too.
I like smileys :) :) :)

Emoticons are quite essential in my opinion. If they are not there, I have to use the actual things that make the smilie appear such as ; )  . No-one can see that grin/wink or laugh when you are sarcastic or poking fun on a forum and unless you accompany it with the right emoticon it can badly taken the wrong way! I will usually end my last word with a smilie to let the reader know my facial expression. :)

That said, people that just fill their posts with them and the smilies are not representational of how the person is really expressing themselves really annoy me!
Paul really knows how to use them... ;)

>:( It can be really hard to tell what people are saying purely through text, and even more so with typed words.

For some people, sarcasm is hard to understand, and this is especially true in a multinational place such as SIMV where many of the members don't speak English. I suppose smilies just make everything a little easier for everyone  ;)
