Never been there but Boston is known as America's Walking City  
Don't remember many cyclists but I found Washington DC* easy enough to survive in without a car.

*Plenty of joggers to watch out for.

LOL! The irony of that is that "Beantown" has some of the most horrific traffic in the country... and Boston-area drivers are known in the NYC area as "Massholes" ...
The "Big Dig" project, which will put most of the through traffic underground, will improve pedestrian life there, but it will still be a nightmare for commuters, freight operators or travelers passing through.
But it will  be hidden from view... this is called "progress".

All of these "walker-friendly" cities are terrific if you don't live in the 'burbs and work in the city- the idea of using mass transit daily looks good on paper, but  it's astounding how much time (and money!)people are willing to spend on trains and buses so they can live outside the city.
My present commute isn't too bad, but it's gotten much more crowded... pretty soon they will need "shovers" like they have in Japan...

My wife went to school in Boston so I'm really familiar with it.  You can walk from one end clear to the other with little difficulty, although it can be unpleasant in winter.  It's a college town so it's alive during the semester and dead during the summer (which is nice).  You DON'T want to drive in Boston.  The whole city was laid out in the 1700's with road routings chosen by the vagarities of wandering cattle, and they're poorly marked.  Parking is expensive (when you can find it), and traffic is really bad.  But the subway system is exellent, you can easily get around without owning a car.

But getting in and out of the city is awful.  Public transit outside the city is slow (takes longer taking the train as it does driving).  Roads in and out of the city jam up in rush hour (before the big dig they'd be jammed up 24/7.)  So if you want to live in Boston you need to live and work IN Boston, don't commute.  But if you do live and work IN Boston you won't want or need a car to get around.  It's a rather beautiful city, lots to do, lots of history, great place to visit (it has a somewhat English style, which you UK folks may enjoy).  But I don't enjoy urban life so Boston isn't for me.  It makes for a great place to visit on weekends (without traffic I can be in the city in 45 minutes).  :)

Yeah, I've been there too many times to count, it was a required stop on the way out to Wyoming, we had to stock up on their free ice water.  That deal is just too good to pass up.  "Where in the hell is Wall Drug" was on a bumper sticker we bought there once.

lol.... we got the worlds longest tram, intel, Eclipse aviation, mountains, NEW mexican (i strongly advise against eating mexican food here ) food, art galleries, Kirtland air force pace, home of the V-22 Osprey testing, and the tallest building in New Mexico, towering at an amazing 21 stories high!!!

Most of my Chums here see to be satisfied with flying shiny, aluminium, jet propelled, passenger Buses, at a height of 50,000 feet ASL...
..whereas old Fozzer loves exploring the world in his little Cessna piston props, and admiring Uncle Bills scenery below me at an altitude of 800 feet AGL... ...!

I think it's fantastic to be able to visit many countries around the world with MS Flight Sims and the price of a few pennies of electricity...
...places that I will/could ever visit in my lifetime... ...!

Being retired for zillions of years, I have spent most of the past 10 years travelling the World with my trusty FS '98, 2000, 2002, 2004, FSX....armed with various relief maps in my lap... ...!
...A fantastic education... ...!

It's the best you can have. Kick in the autopilot, lean back, listen to radio chatter, admiring the deep blue above and the green-brown landscape below knowing that in a matter of hours you'll be far from home.
