North Manchester, Indiana.  Small little farm town that is slowly dieing due to factories closing or moving to Mexico.  Its still a nice place to be with a collage and our basic needs like a grocery, fast food, etc.  Population is only around 6000 if you only include legal citizens.  You can get anywhere in this town either by walking or a short bike ride.  Other then an occasional theft, vandalism, or assalt on someone who probably deserved it, crime is pretty low.  Overall if it wasnt a dieing town it would be a great place to live out my life.  But within 10 years there will be nothing left here but fast food, collage, and retirement homes.  With big corporations taking over its becoming harder for us small scale farmers to make anything.  Now if you want to farm you have to have huge amounts of land or livestock to barely make a profit.

We do have one thing i like, some of the little mom and pop stores still exist here.  Theres an old time barber, little craft stores, the Main Street bar and grill, and a few more little odds and ends.  Right now there is a group who is restoring an old soda shop back to its origional state.  When it opens hopefully this summer it will have old fashioned hand made candy, serve hot dogs/food, all your old chocolate Cokes, etc, there will be a bar to sit at and enjoy it all 8-)  They are restoring it from photos taken in the 70's when it was still up and running.

Most of my time is spent out in the country though, as I always have.  Only lived here since 2003.  I could never see myself liking it here in town since 15 years of my life was spent in the country where we only had 10 neighbors in a square mile.  Still miss the place though, my grandparents are still living there at least, so still get to enjoy it before they sell out.  Used to go horse back riding all the time, run barefoot in the summer, just all kinds of fun.  

Planning to give this town another 3-5 years and see what happens.  Everything I want is still here, but with jobs going away and nothing new coming in theres not much left that pays a living wage  If this town doesnt show any signs of improvement over a couple years then I will be looking for somewhere else to go.  Probably end up in Arizona, been all over the south west and Arizona was definatly my favorite state, or even towards the Texas, New Mexico border.

But no matter where I end up, my goal is to get some land and build a house, then start a cattle ranch.  Want to get a couple horses too.  Even if its 2050 and theres all kinds of technology ill still be out in the fields on horseback runnin the cattle.  Thats another thing you will still find around here, people are stuck in the older ways with a few modern conveniences.  Fancy technology can kiss our a$$  Work aint work if you sit there and only have to push a button every few minutes.  

I just want a simple life with a small family and our own farm.  Hopefully that will eventualy take root.  

PS.  If you hate southern accents, this isnt the place for you, we've got our own dialect goin on around here and its 90% southern

Nah. Every idiot can have a car. And that's about the picture I get from the rest of the road traffic when I'm using the car.

Sorry to be offensive, but that is exactly my problem with Southern California.  It's too darn crowded.  Yea the weather is good, though often hazy and sometimes, flat out smoggy, quality of life goes down when you pay an arm and a leg to buy a home and end up spending an average of 2 hours and even sometimes up to 4 hours a day commuting to and from work.

Going back to topic of biking, Tucson is a pretty bike friendly city. Almost every road has a Bike lane, the city is covered with bike routes, and plenty of open space for the off roaders. And the city is plastered in signs and bumper stickers saying "Share the streets, Give a Bike 5 feet." Although thats not always the case  ::)  We also have a public transport system thats pretty reliable, can get you anywhere in the city for $1-$2  ;D

Florida (and Hawaii) is 75F and sunny year round, but we don't have as much smog or people

That's why I want to move to Florida.

and south carolina (anderson near clemson) ... its alrite.... just so untidy... to many trailors

but i would much rather stay in a nice quite english village for my years to come

Well you can't make that assumption when you visited 1/100th of the country now can you?  First off, don't walk in NYC after dark unless you're in a large group.

South Carolina?  The state itself isn't bad, but i'm not a fan of a lot of people who live there, same goes for majority of the south, you'd be hardpressed to find evidence down there that the North won the American Civil War... :-/

Try Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, or Portland, Oregon for a change (not to mention South Florida!).

The other thing that bothers me sometimes is the traliers. They are always junky and rusty. I just don't get it but maybe somebody else does.  ::)
