Why should the army suffer? I think a couple of months in a small box at the bottom of the Atlantic should do the trick. If they can survive that they're allowed back into society and if they die from a lack of oxygen that is their problem (literally)

...I remember I heard somewhere that 40 lashes were the most a man can endure before dying...

...so 600?...

The guy's going to be in prison for 10 years so they can space those 600 lashings out over quite a period.  If I had to decide when the prisoner would get his lashings I'd make sure it's entirely random.  Having to look forward to your regularly scheduled lashings is bad enough, but not knowing when it's coming is worse.  :)

I was about to make some moral speech about how we are all taking pleasure in the pain and suffering of a fellow human being (the Slapper from SA), but that's exactly what he was doing to get himself into this. I think his punishment is most fitting, not only because it will suck for him, but because we're all talking about it and laughing the same way his friends were when they saw his little video. Hey, maybe they should video tape it, and give the victim a copy to show all of their friends.
