Not so happy slapping

Happy slapping for those who are not UK based is the "sport" of attacking a innocent passer by and filming it on your mobile phone and then sharing it amongst your mates. It is generally done by groups of teenagers.

In this weeks Daily Telegraph:

A gang of not so happy slappers in Brighton got more than they bargained for when they took on a former amateur boxer. Curtis Mulcare, 31, a salesman put two of them in hospital and the four teenagers aged 16 and 17 have since been arrested for causing affray................so there is a god after all (though part of me waits for said toe rags to sue Mr Malcare for assault and psychological trauma).

However, in Saudi Arabia:

The leader of the group of happy slappers was given a 10-year sentence and 600 lashes. The penalties are intended to send a stern warning that "happy slapping" will not be tolerated. The gang could be seen on mobile phone video footage laughing as one of the assailants as he repeatedly prodded one woman "from head to toe". One cleric said that the crimes were so serious that the defendants were fortunate to have escaped the death penalty............Now that is what we need.

Brilliant. They might think twice before doing that again. I'm surprised that the victim wasn't arrested & locked up. Things must be changing at last. I live in hope.

I would assume in the US that the victim would have been arrested and charged for beating up those poor little children.  There was a case back in the 1980's where some guy on the subway was confronted and threatened by a group of teens weilding sharpened scewdrivers.  The victim in this case was legally licensed to cary a firearm, and shot and killed one of the assailants.  I believe he ended up in jail for his actions.  In the US the only victims seem to be the ones who initiate the violence.

there was about a month or two last year when, in my school, you couldnt walk 20 yards without being tripped over and kicked around like a football in front of mobile phones. Of course, only the unpopular lot were given the happyslap treatment. Uhm... im not unpopular... really...  :(  :P

Some years back I got involved in an incident that whilst not filmed on mobile phones ('cos they didn't have cameras in those days) was akin to this. Nine of them, one of me. I was the last man standing The police were most impressed.... I neglected to mention my military, boxing and martial arts experience :-? The Saudis are alittle over the top...

...I remember I heard somewhere that 40 lashes were the most a man can endure before dying...

...so 600?...

...I remember a case a year or two back where a ex-special forces guy out on a hunting trip was confronted by 14 or so drunk rednecks, who apperantly were so drunk that they shot at him. So the guy returned fire, killing 5 of the rednecks...and he ended up being convicted of 5 counts of 2nd degree murder...

...If you ask me, that guy did the world a favor by riding 5 people who were all obviously unfit to reproduce (or just simply live for that matter...)
