Coin collectors...I need some help!!!

Postby Triple_7 » Thu Jan 25, 2007 4:18 pm

Started sorting through some old coins in my collection.  In desperate need of some money and was looking to sell a few.  But...I have no idea what some of them are.  Most were givin to me by my grandpa who did some traveling.  Most are from Asia or Europe.  Have a ton of German coins.  Heres the main 6 in question.

1,2,3
4,5,6

Fronts

Backs

Scans came out kind of dark.

#1 Edit: Solved...100 Cash coin from Ho-Nan China.

#2 couldnt get to come out any lighter...its in pretty good condition.  Date is 1856, front lettering is "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR"...back lettering "EMPIRE FRANCAIS DIX CENTIMES"  Diameter is 1 1/8 inch.

#3 only english lettering is on the front..."10 SEN" the rest is in an Asian language. 5/8ths inch diameter.

#4 Date 1936, front lettering "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANO" back lettering "1936 M 5 CENTAVOS" 3/4 inch diameter.

#5 front lettering "HALF DRACHM OSCO"  Under the 3 S theres a tiny U.S.A. printed. Back is the same minus the USA.  Smallest coin I own with only a 9/16 inch diameter.

#6 Front lettering "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE" 5 hole C with "MES" printed in the middle, 1920.  Back just has the R hole F.

Any information on these coins would be appriciated.  Have more in question but these are the ons I think would have the most value.

Our Family passes all their treasured possessions down to each generation, without a thought of selling them off...I've got loads of "Stuff" to pass down to my Children, Grand-Children, Great-Grand-Children, etc... :)...!

I wonder if your dear-old Grandad would be upset if he thought you were getting rid of them... :o...!

Being a cunning linguist...

1) Possibly Vietnamese (French Indo-China?)
2) French small change!
3) No idea!!!!!!!
4) Mexican
5) Greek
6) French or French colony (possibly Algerian?)

Can you try taking a photo of them on a well lit desk so we can see them a little better?

I know precisely nothing about foreign coins but from a quick google number 1 is Chinese from the Ho-Nan province. This one on eBay looks similar. ---> CLICK

Well...Hagar as found #1...the on on ebay is a 20 cash peice and mines a 100.  That worn letter i thought was an A is accualy the C...is the only letter visible...the rest are worn away :-[

I know it seems strange selling off passed down coins.  But my grandpa sent these to me with specific orders to sell them if needed.  I have held on to them for a couple years now and probably wont sell unless one is worth a fair amount.  Wont sell an old coin for $5.  Probably wont sell them right now, but was also wanting some more information on them.  I've never been able to find much info.  Currious as to the value in my collection.

If #5 is Greek...any idea why theres a tiny USA printed on the front :-/  Deffinatly not an American coin.

Will try to get a better picture...if my camera will allow it :-[

I have a small collection of foreign coins myself. I also happen to have another example of your #6 coin. I have always believed that it was French, mainly because I have another French coin (20 Centimes, 1963) and it has the same slogan "Liberte Egalite Fraternite" on it. The reverse side has the words "Republique Francaise", which on our other coin in simply abbreviated to RF. The "C MES" on the small coin #6 is probably short for Centimes.

I don't know about #5 being Greek. I realize that it has the word "Drachm" as in drachma, the currency in Greece. But I have seen a whole lot of Greek money and have never seen USA printed on any of it. I could be wrong though. :-?

What are they worth? No idea. I collect them for my own satisfaction, not to make money. ;)

Could #3 be Indonesian / around that area? I did a quick google of "sen" as a currency and apparently it was used / is used in Cambodia, Indonesia (no longer used), Brunei and a few other areas. :-?
