A Brief History of the Royal Flying Corps in World War One:

I've just bought it today, it looks really good, so I was wandering if anybody else has already read it?

Ugh, WWI...when dogfights were nothing but boring.

Btw: I'm reading a book about the LSK (look it up if you don't know what it means) of the GDR at the moment. Lots of nice pics.

Oh my days, how can you say that? Back then was when they were interesting!! Its NOW that they are boring...

Back then there were open cockpits, nice 'low and slow' flying..and planes that were stupidly dangerous to fly normally, let alone dog fighting. They were the real pilots, now the pilot is more of a systems analyst ;D

:-/ I don't think the pilots had time to get bored...........

Considering the life expectancy of RFC pilots and observers was typically measured in weeks rather than months or years.

Aye, but the bullets went as fast as they do today. And the flak shells. And as a pilot leaped out of a burning plane, no parachute, he fell at the same velocity a human body would fall today.

All kidding aside, dogfighting in those old crates meant a lot more closing maneuvers and a lot more shooting... it was pretty hairy stuff, despite the low airspeeds. And no radios (within a formation ),no radar,no armor, unreliable guns, lousy weather reporting... hardly boring, as every flight was an adventure, whether one encountered the enemy or not.
It was exciting, all right- a little too exciting.

It wasn't boring when the pilots were shooting at each other with their personal weapons... ;D

Is the movie Flyboys any good?  It didn't do well at the box office and it'll soon be out on DVD.  I'm curious about it.
