There is no oil on that ship. Only the diesel in the fuel tanks. I think reporters are taking a liberty on some of the facts there...

I don't care what sort of oil it is. It will inevitably end up on my local beach. :P

Thats the latest MCA report on it.

50 containers overboard, none of which are thought to contain chemicals. Nothing said about oil or fuel spills, only that another tug is due to arrive that will take off whats on board.

There was a reference to leaked diesel a few days ago, but the coastguard said that it had been dispersed naturally and posed no threat to the enviroment.

I think your beach is safe for the time being. ;)

Not quite sure where these really should be, cause they ain't my photo's (so not in the photo's forum) and there ain't an aeroplane in sight (so not the real aviation forum).

Anyway, as some of you may be aware it's been a little breezy in Europe this last few days. Anyway, here's a few pictures from the bridge of a bulk carrier in the English Channel near Antwerp in a force 10 storm... :o

I'm afraid someone is underestimating the dangers of hydrocarbons... Even small amounts contaminate vast amounts of water. Even if the hydrocarbons don't wash up ashore, they do harm on the ecosystems in the area they are spilt.

For countless years, people thought the oceans were so vast, they would dillute any wasteflows that reached them. By now we know better. Traces of manmade chemicals can be found in higher than normal percentages in places where the ocean should be "clear". This type of wastemanagement will influence the ocean's waterquality even long after we purify every new polluent streams...

And I saw some pictures on the news today, where they stated that the dam to contain the leaked oil was lifted, because it was in danger of beeing broken by containers falling of the ship...

Containing any fuel or oil leak is the main function of the four salvage tugs that are now at the scene of the vessel. They've had oil containment booms around the ship from the word go, but as you said they had to be lifted when she started shedding containers. The first thing on the to do list by all involved is to get the fuel off and I believe the ship that's going to do that is due to arrive in the early hours of the morning. I know any amount of oil in the sea is never a good thing but this isn't an oil spill like the Torry Canyon was.

Every single day more oil naturally bubbles from underground deposits to the surface of the gulf of Mexico than was spilled in the Exxon Valdeze disaster.

So have you been Wreaking yet Woody?
A couple of guys found a container with a BMW motorbike in good condition. Others have even found Quad Bikes. As long as you sign for what you find, the police are just standing by.......salvage rights, though you may have to pay a settlement later, still be cheaper.

2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Not yet. This is happening quite a way away from me. Well over 100 miles up the coast. Apparently tomorrow the ships owners and their hired security are going to arrive at the beach so I suppose that'll put a stop to most of it. I think the thing to do is follow the winds and tide and find one of the 160 odd containers that are unaccounted for. Be interesting to see the shipping companys security. Apparently MSC is known as the Mafia Shipping Company for a reason. :o
