Rottydaddy's at it again...

A mysterious natural gas-like odor hit Manhattan Monday morning causing building evacuations from Rockefeller Center to the city's West Side.

The Fire Department began getting calls about the odor around 9 a.m.

No cause had been identified yet, but New York FOX affiliate WNYW-TV reported that New Jersey's PSEG is investigating whether the smell might have originated with a gas leak in Jersey City, N.J.

What an uproar it's caused here...

I'm not sure if it was related, but my train in from NJ was stopped way downtown, causing me to have to scramble for the subway, which in turn had a problem farther uptown...
Here in the office at Rockefeller Plaza, there was actually an announcement on the emergency PA, advising us to stay indoors and close the windows. One of my co-workers actually closed the window, as if a minor gas leak several miles away would somehow endanger us up here on the 26th floor...  ::)

Turns out the source is supposedly way down on Bleeker Street somewhere... meanwhile, I can't smell anyhting unusual. Mind you, I live in Newark- only thing that smells odd to me is fresh air...  ;D

His gas oven has just been sighted in orbit. Seems he used a match to look for the said leak.

It's happened before, you will well remember, so there's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't happen again...

I've been telling my concerned NYC colleagues that this alleged gas-cloud was nothing compared to any given windless summer day in the east part of my fair city, when noxious clouds of benzine, chlorine, and God-knows-what settle over the refineries and chemical plants... sometimes driving down the ramp off the Pulaski skyway, it's bad enough to burn the mucous membranes... and occasionally it will move across the airport, picking up a delicate bouquet of burned Jet A, then assaultme in my home... I like the smell of jet exhaust, but not when it's adulterated like that.

But I can't complain- I'm just happy they don't make Agent Orange in Newark anymore!!;D

First thing I thought when I saw that on CNN:

"It smells bad in Manhattan and suddenly that's national news?!?!"

I had visions of the famous photo of Harry Truman holding high the newspaper "Dewey Wins".  Only in this case the newspaper said "Terrorists Attack Manhattan with Stink Bomb".  Seems like the networks had pretty much already decided that a smell in Manhattan must be a result of terrorism.

It is puzzling... maybe it's the 9/11 effect, but New Yorkers used to take stuff like this in stride. Like the time a giant sinkhole suddenly appeared in the middle of  5th Avenue and water and fire started shooting out of it...  :D
