Long Life bulb

If there is a sparky around, can you tell please why this "Long Life" bulb when switched off for hrs, sometimes a day or two, it keeps flashing very faintly every 1o-15 secs ?

First thoughts are faulty switch(not going fully open) or power surge in the neutral circuit.
Second thoughts are you have aliens in your attic or live too close to a nuclear power plant.  ;D

If by long life you mean these new types that are similar to a fluorescent tube, but in bulb form, they can be "influenced" in the same way a fluorescent tube can be. You can illuminate a Fluorescent tube by being very close to an electro magnetic field, i.e. overhead power cables or if the light is close to the incoming power point in a house. Is it possible that your bulb is close to a high power cable?

Please describe this "long life bulb".  Is it an A profile (normal bulb) incandescent?  Is it a compact flourescent?  Is it an LED?  Does it screw in to a normal household bulb socket?  Is it something that goes in an instrument panel of a car or airplane?  Is it a commercial street light type thing?  Is it a flourescent tube?  Is it a automotive headlight?

There are many, many "long life bulbs" out there...

..mm....Age Concern gave us pensioners a free long life bulb for each room in the house.......very generous of them............they seem to give excellent light for much less wattage so I assume less cost to run....and less damage to the planet...Mind you, be careful not to drop them or they only last as long as NORMAL ones...........commoner

Please back to the flashing bulb.

It is a bayonet in my PC room ceiling, just like the right one illustrated above by fellow foggy Commoner.

Lots of stuff can cause 'em to light up.  Exposure to electromagnetic fields is a good, already mentioned source.  What's in the room right above your light fixture?  Anything which produces a strong magnetic field or draws a lot of electrical power?  A big motor perhaps?  Something that creates a big spark?  Sometimes in a lightning storm you may notice a flourescent light bulb flash or glow due to the EMF.  Same thing here.
