Totally disagree with you Saitek, art is what the viewer makes of it...just because you don't understand it doesnt mean its bad, maybe the problem is with you ;). There is also far more to contempory art, more than just painting a picture a someone or something, its far deeper than that...

I agree that your sort of 'classical' art takes a lot of skill, and shows some beautiful scenes...but thats not what art is. Well not real art anyway... (imao  ;D)

As I already said;
Just because you are complicated and nobody understands what you do, does not make you an artist.

It seems to me that some of these so-called artists are talented confidence tricksters. However, if they can convince the "experts" & persuade people to pay them

They might claim to understand it. Whether they actually do understand it is debatable.

Yeh i do agree with you, some may miss the idea behind it completely...some may find their own meanings in it...thats what its all about. There are no rules in art  :)

There was a TV documentary here in the UK a couple of years ago in which the so called "Art Experts" were fooled completely by the random splatterings of a baby Elephant.

The Elephant had discovered it's artistic bent when it's enclosure was being painted it grabbed a stray brush and started to daub on the walls. Someone had the bright idea to stick it in front of a canvas with poster paints and let it do its thing.

A TV producer saw the etchings and concoted the idea for the documentary. Several art critics and experts from top art houses and auction houses were fed a back story about a young artist of particular talent with an unquenchable desire to paint. They fell for it hook line and sinker.... untill the artist was revealed and there was much back tracking, spluttering and denial... even when the tapes of their over the top musings on the paintings were shown back to them.

Art is in the eye of the beholder ..... unless you have enough BS and bo****ks to scam the "experts" into telling the public what they should be liking.

I suspect that you're an art student. ;)

hehe far from it, Physics student...! I do adore modern art though, dunno why, just kinda strikes a chord with me.  Only person i know who is though i gotta admit, infact trying to convince somebody to come with me and go see some of the exibits in London, but to no avail, not even my girlfriend will come ;D

And your definatley right though Hagar, art is a totally personal thing, know two people look at the same piece in the same way...thus people are into really different things...

I think I heard about that Eno! Pretty funny!

You may disagree with me Cobra, but don't get me wrong. I never mean art as just life-like paintings or sculptures. Art can come in many sorts of ways. As I said art is a skill and therefore it should be something special. If any Joe Blogs can assemble it then it isn't much IMO. There are varying degrees and types of art. On the one hand you have pictures, sculptures and other forms of objects that look real. For me that is the best art. Then you get are that is stylised. That is art and may demonstrate a lot of skill. Other types of art may not resemble any known real life objects, but are also great works. So what am I referring to? I am referring to the peices of "art" that come to my attention every now and again via the media that get masses amounts of public money (that could be spent elsewhere) when they are peices of rubbish and I wouldn't want to be paid to hang them or display them. The link I provided of the US competition which produced amazing and extraordinary peices is what I think should be encouraged. That is what really credits a country is when it has artists like that. Oh that a few more public buildings and institutions in the UK would display art of that nature!

They were very well executed.  I can appreciate the talent that went into them.  But for me personally, they were hardly enjoyable.

Art's complex.

If there is meaning in it, then it's art...

Matt, I think you're taking the artist steryotype a bit far- many artists are rational, normal people, for example John Olsen and Arthur Boyd.

However true the first statement may be, there is some art that is a litte too avant-garde- there once was a man who put fish in a blender and encouraged people to turn it on- to see what it felt like....art? I think not, IMO.

C'est non une Pipe, anyone?
