Careers...hmm

Postby masmith » Sat Nov 18, 2006 5:19 pm

A few weeks ago I sat a 300 question careers paper :o, I have just received the results and was talked trough them by a careers adviser, and quite a few interesting things came up careers I had never thought of before but know I think they may suit me...

I was told that good A levels for me would be:

Mathematics
Physics
Chemistry
Science of Sport
Politics

The Careers that they advised me were related to my interests and knowledge were:

Marine Engineer
Royal Air Force officer
Royal Marine Officer
Army Officer
Aeronautical Engineer
Chemical industry

If anyone's profession is a marine engineer I would much like to hear about what a Marine engineer does? and whats a naval architect ???

Thanks if any one has that information, and at the moment I just going to keep my options open I was told by the careers advicer I should realy know what to do in two years time...time will fly... like always ;)

A naval architect is a yacht/ship designer.

Marine engineer is less obvious. You could either be an engineer on board a vessel, or someone who specialises in marine engines, equipment etc.

Don't listen to your careers advisor. They have an inflated sense of self importance. Plenty of time to think about things like that during your gap year/s and uni. :)

Naval airchitects design ships I believe.

As for the others I've made a few amendments to your list! For a start, the RM and Army uniforms are green, which is enough to put most people off. If you are looking to fly, by all means consider the AAC and the RN (why does the list not include RN Officer?), but for pure range I would suggest the RAF is logical, be it as a member of the two-winged master race (pilot), or rear crew (WSO/WSOp).

If you want to go to uni (3 years of fun, and better pay if you then join the forces), then maybe an Aero Eng degree would work in your favour, particularly with Maths and Physics A-Levels. It would be a very good basis for the academic side of a flying career too.

What stage are you at? I'm guessing mid GCSE? Any questions drop a PM.
:)

IMO the best way to do things (how I did them) is to think roughly what subjects you enjoy doing. All the experts agree that it is dumb to do qualifications (in your case A-levels) that you will find hard or boring. Do the ones you enjoyed at GCSE and/or got good grades in. If those happen to be P.E, R.E or something like that - try again. ;)

However, think ahead. If you want to go into a science at university you need an A-level in it and if you want to do something in the business sectors any business related A-level will be invaluable. I speak through personal experience as a 1st year student.

It is best to decide what you want to do (roughly) sooner rather than later as it means you can plan ahead and get to do what you want to do for a good salary sooner. Not essential at all of course. :)
In my case I was interested in becomming a Chartered Accountant. I decided to take A-level Accountancy, Law (because I am interested in anything legal) and economics (because I like stuff to do with the economy such as interest rates etc). After I got into my A-levels I had so decided on what I was doing that I didn't apply for any other subjects other than Accountancy and Finance in my uni applications.

I'm now deep into my first semester at uni. It's hard work, but great fun and university is just so cool. :) You don't have to go to uni, but it is becoming more and more difficult in the Uk to get a well paid job without one and I don't bet how hard its going to be 20 years from now (when you and I will NOT want to go back to school)!

I'm in my final year of GCSEs,

I must of forgotten Royal navy officer, but it did come up...

However I am quite attracted to the military as I come from a forces family, I have all ways had that boyhood dream of becoming a pilot, I'm quite confident I can get through the selection process but when it comes to the flying I unfortunately suffer from motion sickness however I have not given this aspiration up yet :-/...

The military also offer great sport which I'm into they pay well something like

Motion sickness can be "cured", either by gaining exposure through flying reasonably regularly (ie flying training), or if that fails, a couple of days at Henlow and Boscombe Down, to be "de-sensitised". So I wouldn't let that discourage you. I know a few people who found they were ill during their initial flying.

...Hey! wheres the "United States Navy Officer" option...? ;D

My school makes every one do a career thing every year...

...mine has been quite consistant over the years (then again, so has everyone's...)...

1. Explosives Specialist
2. Judge
3. Comedian
4. Pilot
5. Military Career

...In that order too I believe...

One of my friends gets "Gynecologist" as top choice every year...anyone wanna take a shot at his favorite word?... ;D

...and another one gets "Mortician"...fits her perfectly...but I'm not allowed to say it :-X

...^^ God speed to whom ever ends up being married to her...! :-X

Viva la party!

My careers advisor at school was a hippy and kept trying to talk people into rather lame jobs. So I joined up and got a pretty uniform and a gun just to freak the bugger out ;D
