Yep, plenty of those examples around in life.

"Oh we need to put tax up!" "Everyone must have one of these - it's law". But when the reason comes to an end the tax remains and when the compulsory bits and peices are made law the high VAT remains. This sounds just like the UK's political government in the last 10 years!

the weirdest part is this isn't an election year, when republicians will try to get the vote by lowering gas prices.

Midterm polls, my friend... you can be certain prices will shoot up again next summer, or possibly mid-winter when they can really stick it to people who heat their homes and businesses with oil.

I cannot remember it off the top of my head but I know that there is a real, non political reason for the worldwide reduction in oil prices. I'm sure someone here will know. All I remember is it didn't make too much sense to me but the results of it speak for themselves.

Well the reason is three fold. Firstly a greater trust in the stability of world oil supplies, especially to do with Iran and secondly the finding of more reserves and OPEC maintaining their current supply.

But the reason our oil prices are high is because of tax.

I know that. And it's been that way for a long time and will remain so.

Imagine if the government stopped charging fuel tax? Thats a huge amount of money that won't be avaliable to them. Which would mean they'd have to have another tax somewhere else or considerably cut public spending.

So don't complain about it too much.

So when we are all driving Hydrogen powered cars that only push water vapour out the exhaust, what do you think they will tax instead. They can hardly justify the present system. Your road tax is now to cover the potential flooding in low lying areas due to the bucket of water you threw out of your car driving from London to Edinburgh

All I'm saying is that such a heavy tax on fuel means we don't pay some other tax somewhere else. The government will always get the money eventually. It just depends on what they tax to get it.

It seems quite obvious to me that they will tax whatever fuel is in common usage, in this case hydrogen. Either that or increase the road vehicle tax.
