Hmm... I like top gear, think that the presenter is great, but why do people react so emotional to this? Come on, it's spread all over the place in the media, while the man clearly knew what the risk of such extreme cars are! I'm far more moved if I see a little article in the newspaper about yet another little child that got seriously injured after been mown down by a car... I guess it all boils down to beeing famous to get attention...

Although you don't know these people on a personal level (recent cases being Richard Hammond, Steve Irwin, Raymond Baxter), it's not nice to have someone you look up to, or are entertained by, harmed in any way, be it injury, or death. The general public can relate to these people, by an interest (examples here being cars, animals and aircraft) or simply because of the entertainment they bring. A sense of humour can help, too, much like with the Top Gear team, or any comedy actors, such as the Monty Python lot.

I don't think Raymond Baxter's death can be compared to hysteria surrounding Steve Irwin and the Hamster. He was a well known TV figure throughout his career, was not a celebrity as such, and the (limited) coverage of his death was no more than one would expect.
Raymond Baxter's death, although saddening, was hardly unexpected, being 84 years old. Though the reactions were much the same on the aviation forums I've visited - these being the people that knew Baxter, and related to him (mainly the older generation). The lack of media coverage (in comparison to Hammond or Irwin), is probably because he's been out of the limelight for quite a while, and wasn't known by as many people.
Exactly - that was the point I was trying to make...
