Well, personally I don't watch to much of it no more... Football lost it's appeal, cycling takes forever, etc...

But I do still watch interesting finals in tennis, parts of cycling contests like the Tour de France are part of the holiday-feeling and I bet I'll watch the Worldcup-final if I find the time.

Beeing in an actal crowd is another story. There the sport itself doesn't dominate the experience. Cheering and chanting with over 20.000 other people is truely awesome. It can be overwhelming!

My 2 cents anyway...

I am a F1 fan. Can't get enough. There is however two problems with this:

1. F1 is so dam expensive.
2. You see "your" car every minute and a half or so only.

The answer is TV. No queing, no traffic jams, not fat guy with a hat sat in front of you.

The only one I like to watch on TV is Moto GP (I do sometimes miss it due to family commitments). The only reason I watch it on TV is there isn't a Hungarian round for me to attend!
The Red Bull Air Race series although there is a Hungarian round I watch on TV as the prospect of 7 hours of travel and being hemmed in by thousands of drunk idiots who only just about know what an aeroplane is fills me with dread!
Otherwise like Romulus I much prefer doing to watching. The only time I'd watch rather than do is when laid up with injuries And doing things like climbing does add-up to a lot of hospital time!

.....mm....Golf, that's my sport..........NOT playing you understand, just watching, and ONLY on TV. Playing is far too athletic and actually being there is dangerous as you could miss the shout of "FORE" and get hit  :o and with all that shouting and fervent excitment, being there would be just too much

I rarely watched TV when when I was very young and, like you now, watching sports was too boring. I still have little but a casual interest in basketball or hockey, tennis (sorry, Omag) and golf (unless you're just interested in being in the outdoor scenery) are way too boring to watch.
I had an aunt who was a Giants (American) football fan and a cousin's husband is a die-hard Patriots fan; I picked up a slight interest in both teams as well as for the Chargers (because the main symbol for my camping club was a lightning bolt -- strange this comes up here because I was contemplating putting the resultant symbol in my sig).
One of my uncles was an avid Red Sox baseball fan so when I was with him it was on the radio or TV, like it or not, and a friend of the family had taken an interest in the Cardinals, the name being the same for one of my school teams. I also played baseball in school and softball in the USAF and bible camp; also coached a women's softball team for one season.
Usually, though, I'll only listen to a game on the radio but, even when it's on TV, I'm usually doing something else other than just sitting there; as you say, it's often rather boring to just sit and watch (or listen) ... so here we sit at a computer keyboard like the rest of our SimV fans .

Golf has always struck me as the ultimate in boring. I tried playing it once in High School. The result....lmao....a mega slice to the left (?!) that hit a building and headed right at the green. My coach....lmao....threatened my life if it went hole in one. It bounced up to the edge of the green and he said that was close enough for a severe beating....lmao. Also, when I hit the ball.....lmao...I turned around and all the guys behind me had hit the dirt.....

Tried tennis also and found it interesting to play. But again, boring as hell to watch.

I guess I make a lousy armchair quarterback....

I can only speak for myself. I'm an avid Green Bay Packer fan and hence a huge NFL fan. I agree, that if you sit in front of a TV just to watch the goings on of a any sporting event, it can get pretty tiresome. There's more to it though. When you're raised a Packer fan in Packer country.. it's just part of who you are. Friends, family.. a whole town is part of it. You get to know the players personalities, strengths/weaknesses.. your memory is filled with all the good and bad times in the teams history. Watching the actual game is just a part of it. Plus.. learning the finer points and sublties of NFL football can take a life time.. so it's an ongoing process.

I've either been at, or watched on TV.. every Packer game since 1986.. and most of them prior to that.

Don't watch sports. The only time I was ever really interested is last year when the Seahawks started doing well, and the Gonzaga University basketball was on a winning streak. So unless a local team like that starts doing well, i won't bother

My wife says pretty much the same thing in regards to NASCAR. She was born and raised slap in the middle of NASCAR country. She remembers sitting with her grandfather in his 1965 Ford Pickup and listening to the races on the truck radio and he lived so close to one track that you could hear the race from his house.

I guess my problem understanding stems from my desire to participate. I wasn't that good at many sports, but excelled at Baseball.

Because of being in the military, I developed a fondness for firearms and weaponry in general. So target shooting and sports that involved shooting have always been my favorite sports. But here again, I can't stand to watch all these hunting and fishing shows on cable. That is unless I want to take a nap.....

I have no passion to learn how to play a musical instrument, or learn to act, or write a book.. but I can listen to a great musician for hours, sit through a movie (and enjoy it) and spend all night reading a good book..

Hmmm, now I can relate to that. Although I once could play the guitar and banjo. But due to an injury that has partial paralyzed my left arm.... ...those days are only a memory of long ago.

But I do enjoy many different music genre and I can't really play any instruments (anymore). Although Rap music drives me insane and is one of the few forms of music I truly loath.  ::)

Long ago we would play baseball on the side streets or football in backyards after school, but didn't really watch as spectators.  But there comes a time in your life when you can no longer partipate actively.  That's when being a spectator becomes important - to keep a part of your past alive.  Also, concentrating on one sport as primary, for example, baseball, and putting others on occasionally might be better than spreading out among many.  I got in the habit of watching baseball playoffs and the Series each year because that seems to be the height of excitement and good playing in baseball, but would sometimes catch an on-TV game during season. The beauty of it all is that if you like it, it's all there, if not, you can turn it off.

I think if you actually follow a sport and know what is going on, it is a lot more interesting.  NASCAR is a good example, to most people, it just a bunch of cars going in circles for four hours, which does sound pretty stupid.  But when you think about and keep track of the pit strategies, the points races, and all the technical aspects of the sport (how to loosen/tighten a car up, the aerodynamics of each car, and the actual skill of each individual driver), it's easy to get swallowed up by it and become a fan.  It's analgous to Omag's comment about the Red Bull Air-races, there's the dumb drunk who barely knows what an airplane (aeroplane, whatever) is, and people like us who would be totally amazed by the aircraft performing, the manuevers being used, and the skill of the pilot involved, but to that stupid drunk, it's still, "Hoo-ee, that thar' airplane's goin' fast!".  Just my opinion.
