On this day here in the US we are honoring our war veterans. I'd like to offer my thanks to all those that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

I would like to thank all the veterans that risked, and lost, there lives for this country.

I vividly remember the day I had an epiphany about this; I was just a kid, and prone to associate our flag with negative things... I was drumming in my HS marching band during the local Memorial Day parade, and afterwards I stood for a moment and looked at Old Glory atop the pole in the town center, thinking about the faces of the uniformed vets I'd seen in the parade and on the sidelines. It suddenly dawned on me what any nation's flag is meant to represent, and what it means to a soldier in the field, wherever it flies. I still don't care if someone wants to burn or tread on a flag, or if someone wears one on their head or whatever, but if anyone had tried to mess with that flag in its place of homor, they'd have had to get past me to do it.
War is terrible, but courage and sacrifice are beautiful things. I'm happy to say that I think of fallen war heroes more than once a year...

I visited the history forum first and gave my Memorial entry there; here, I'll address those serving, and who will serve, in their nation's military:

Being a vet myself, and having a decessed grandparent the was in WWII, I am also happy to know it stared here in the Fingerlakes, or at least officaily.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The village was credited with being the birthplace because it observed the day on May 5, 1866, and each year thereafter, and because it is likely that the friendship of General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who led the call for the day to be observed each year and helped spread the event nationwide, was a key factor in its growth.
