I'm joing this discussionm kind of late. When did we go from what gun to buy to cell phones and vacuum cleaners? For which gun to buy, I'm full of opinions and sage knowledge, all of it worth what you pay. For vacuum cleaners, I recommend an Oreck. As much advertising as he does, you know he's sellin' them buggers big time...
I don't have a cell phone, so I can't speak to that. However, I do see people yakking away that to look at them, you'd never think anyone would call them in the first place or that they'd have anyone to call in the second place.
My suggestions for which gun(s) to buy:
For your accuracy-training rifle, buy the Savage 93R17. It is available in lefthand if you are so afflicted, as I am. The righty model has the Accu-trigger-- always a good thing. The ammo is about triple the cost of .22LR, but the accuracy and downrange trajectory beats the .22 all to hell. Plus, it "feels right" when you shoot it, not like a cheap, lightweight toy. Savages are known for having very good accuracy right out of the box. Mine does... Combine the rifle with a scope specifically designed for this cartridge (the BSA Sweet 17-- comes in at least two magnification variations) and you'll be good to go.
For your pistol, I recommend the Ruger Mark II. I have the 10" bull barrel model in blue and it's a tack-driver out to 50 yards or so with opoen sights. I scoped it and it's even better. There are a myriad number of accessories and add-ons for this very popular pistol, so you'll never be wanting a little more for it. B-Square makes a slide-on scope mount for it that requires no drilling or any alteration to your gun and Volquartsen even makes a lefthand grip for it if you're so afflicted, as I am.
Once you develop some skill at putting several bullets into the same hole at 100 yards with the above rifle and the same feat at fifty yards with the above pistol, you'll be knowledgeable enough to choose your long-range gun. Many marksmen use the 6.5mm-.284 because it's very accurate out to 1000 yards and kicks very little for those long days and sweaty palms at shooting tournaments. A serious accuracy rifle can cost serious buckage. Mine is at about $3900 right now with a cheap scope on it. When I get my scope, it will be at almost $7000. I ain't talkin' no Leupold, either. I'm talkin' 'bout the Schmidt-Bender 5-25X PM II. You have to look through one to believe it. I have no words...
Along the way, you'll see various guns that you might want to buy, but I advise you keep your goal in mind and buy only what will suit your needs. Accuracy shooting is fun, challenging and rewarding. It can also be so infuriating as to make you want to chuck it for crossword puzzles. Some days you will amaze yourself; others you'll be sorry you showed up. But it's like golf: the more you practice, the better you get.
And to these guys who "hate" guns, all I can say is that I am sorry for you in your misguided, ill-informed fear. A gun is a tool. It is an inert object until a human hand takes it up. It is incumbent upon the user to be responsible with it. To blame a tool for the actions of a human is cowardice, ignorance, blame-shifting, falling victim to the lies and hype of the media, and irrational fear. Basically, it's liberalism. Liberalsim is a lie, but you'll never hear a liberal admit it. Liberalism says "you can't do it without government intervention." Well, what did we do before government came to wipe our mouths and tie our shoes for us? I suspect we did it ourselves. Then Johnson got elected, chose the blacks as the next victim group to be perpetual voters for the Democrats and it's all been downhill from there. We've taken 7 trillion dollars over the past 40 years from those work and given it to those won't wont-- and the poverty rate is still right about where it was in 1965. Teenage pregnancy is up, murder is up, single-mom homes are up, the prison population is up-- all the ills of society are up since Johnson's Great Society. Liberalism is a failure, but they keep trying because to hear them tell it, it just hasn't been correctly tried yet. Bullclinton!!
