What would any civilian want with a weapon capable of piercing most body armer at 100 yards automatic or not?

No civilian would or should want to be piercing body armor.. but if they were so inclined.. the P-90 would be a poor choice.

The only real "tactical" advantage

Woody, only a select few civilians would want a weapon for such a purpose-and those certainly wouldn't get the weapon legally.  Plus the best weapon for something like that is a high powered rifle anyway.  A 1903 Springfield of Mauser 98 would be ideal using surplus military full metal jacket bullets.  That would easily go through body armor.  I have a Mauser 98 and 2 boxes of FMJ 30.06 bullets for it in my gun safe yet I have no plans to use it on body armor.

These fully automatic weapons submachine guns are designed to put a bunch of bullets into a area near by.  For example, trenches or inside bunkers-they are almost useless for body armor.

Or you could have fun and use blanks. :D Which is an interesting thought...  Are blanks cheaper than "regular" ammunition?  I honestly have yet to see a box on sale.

If I ever decide I want a gun to defend home and castle, I'll probably get a shotgun. Okay, a few, hidden in various parts of the house. ;D
With a shotgun, even if I'm half asleep, if the intruder is in the house and I see them before they can draw on me, I'll hurt them, even if there are three of them.
As for assault rifles (or armor-piercing rounds), other than for very extreme plinking, I don't see why I'd want one. You need much heavier firepower to overthrow the government, and for robbing banks or even the occasional drive-by, they're too conspicuous, and not  ideal for close range. ;D

still interested in a hand gun. Theres a combat range that you run through, and you shoot at targets that pop out of nowhere.

So, I'm kind of interested in action type pistol. Which is why I was interested in the SIG-226. I'm probably going to get the cheaper variant for $350.

But for collection reasons. I just might try to pick up an German Mauser K-98 for $400.

Pistols are a lot of fun, but they are different to shoot and require practice.  I'm not famiular with a SIG-226 so I don't know what to compare to it.  But, if you want a good shooting pistol (something on the inexpensive side and accurate for a pistol) I would suggest a Ruger Mk.II automatic pistol.  It is a small calibur, .22 to be exact, but a lot fun to shoot and an excellent target pistol.  Plus, it is a sleek looking gun (simular curves to an old German Luger).  Of course, pistol ammo is usually fairly cheap so thats not a big deal-but if you want to learn to shoot pistols, thats what I would get.  In fact, I bought a Ruger Mk.II in January for that very purpose-it is my first pistol and I love it.  They have actually released the newest verson of this pistol this year (Mk.III) but I have no experience with it.  I assume its very simular with a couple updates.

To give you an idea of what they look like-here are a few pictures.  You can get them with different barrell lengths (and bull barrels as well):

The one at the bottom is the one I bought, its a Mk.II NRA Special Edition-basically it has some engravings and white hand grips (and is a little more collectible).  Anyway, like I said, its a .22 so you might want something with a little more pop-but there is no better target pistol.  Anyway, you should be able to get your average Mk.II for around $225 or so.  Rugers lists the Mk.III on there site for $322 as the suggested retail but from what I have seen their prices on the site are high.  I paid $300 for mine but its a special edition one-and I probably paid a little high for it.

For the Mauser K-98, they are a wonderful rifle.  I suggest finding a pre-war German built one though-they are better quality.  I have a 1938 German built K-98 and it is a great rifle; it even has Third Rhich markings stamped onto it (the eagle with the swastica in its talons).  Mine has been sporterized to shoot 30.06 (rather than 8mm) and I use it has a hunting rifle.  I don't think there is a better bolt action rifle out there.

Now we come to one of the oddities of the English firearm laws.

The licence required to own one of these, a 105mm howitzer:

Is exactly the same licence as you would need to own this, a smoothbore, muzzel loading musket:

Which in turn is just a standard shotgun licence.

It's cause they're all smoothbore, you see. ;D
