The 2006 equivalent would be a fully-loaded 747 in distress, losing fuel, over water, one pilot dead, the other semi-comatose...
Imagine the terror, knowing that death is minutes away. I saw the 1996 movie. I remember the elderly couple wearing formal dress, in bed, embracing, as the water rushed into their below-waterline stateroom. That image put the strike on me as to how hopeless the situation was. People died wholesale in those days. It was not uncommon for transportation accidents to kill hundreds at a whack. There were few if any regulations for trains or boats. The "good, old days" really weren't all that good.
