When you said tornado, I thought you meant the military jet Tornado. ;D

LOTS!  People underestimate the longevity of a DC-3.  Tis why I love them so much.  There are HUNDREDS out there flying, and many are still doing their jobs, mostly carrying cargo.  In fact, theres one in Florida that was built in 1945 that still flies cargo to the bahamas every day.  No, its not a restoration job, it has been flying faithfully for 61 years!  So many companies have actually passed up  upgrading to modern turboprops because the good old DC-3 flies more reliably and at a cheaper cost than the new turbos.

DC-3s have been around for 70 years, and Im sure there will be at least one still flying 70 years from now.  In fact, in an article I just read, someone said that the DC-3 is sooo reliable that when the last C-5 is retired, the crew flying it to its resting place will return home in a C-47.

NOTHING matches the DC-3.  It is such a well engineered aircraft that its design holds its own today.  NOTHING can replace a DC-3 except another DC-3.

Sorry, i get emotional about my DC-3s.  Good Ol' Gooney Bird, may you fly on for many, many years :)

Im going to get sick :-/

As far as how many are still flying in my local area alone there are 4, and the one that hold my heart is the Remote Area Medical C47, which in its early life dropped paratroopers over Normandy on D-Day and today is used to deliver medical help to those who need it free of charge.

Which BTW June 10th we will be having our annual D-Day Memorial in Knoxville TN, anyone in the area interested in helping out send me a PM!

..mmm...First plane I ever had a ride in.........was I impressed. Never been so impressed with any plane since..........(maybe it's a bit like the first girl I ever kissed syndrome)

More than 11,000  were built between 1935 and 1946 in the USA, Japan and Russia.....and a recent estimate gave a figure of 800 still doing the business around the world.

God Bless 'em..........commoner 8)
