Class Action Suits

Postby Scorpiоn » Mon Apr 24, 2006 12:06 pm

Have y'all ever gotten one of these letters in the mail from companies about some class action suit?  I got one from Epson.  Apparently some people in California got annoyed with the fact a lot of printers would stop prining when the printer indicated there was no ink left, despite the fact there was still ink.  I've always suspected this to be the case, and it's bothered me as well.  I could get a $45 dollar credit (rubbish) or a juicy $25 dollar check.  I've been advised against it, but I don't see why I shouldn't take a free handout.  Apparently collecting my $25 dollars helps make lawyers richer.  Hooh hah.  So the richer get richer?  So what?  This has always been the case and always will be.  If I can scrape a little dough in the process, then it's all good. :D

Well, I might agree with that myself but Scorp said the letter was from Epson. ::)

My mistake.  It's not from Epson per se. ;)

Felix, I believe that is a different suit, though it does deal with the same allegations.  This is actually what I recieved:

...I would hardly expect a company to sue itself, even in America...
But they are sometimes inclined to make a token offer to registered customers if such litigation is implied. This has been done in the automotive industry. The farcical aspect is that one is inticed to trade in their "lemon" for a new model at an additional 'reduced' cost. Price mark ups being what they are, the manufacturer still makes a profit. ;)

Wow. Sue 'em culture at its best.

Its ink! Sure maybe if the printers were killing people, but this is as bizarre as it is stupid.

Not from Epson at all. I would hardly expect a company to sue itself, even in America. :P :D

Not quite... but I believe they are required to notify customers of any settlement they might be eligible for.
I got a similar notice from Netflix; something to do with some guy suing over hair-splitting interpretation of their advertising ("All your favorite movies" or something like that). I never did look into it further, and I forgot to respond before the deadline. Whatever- I think I get a good deal from them.

I forgot to respond before the deadline.

This is what I don't like about the way these people operate. Failure to respond is regarded as agreement with the proposal when you might not even have received the letter.
